New T60 modem not working

My T60 is 3 months old, today while I was on the internet ( dial up)
the screen went black, (as in other threads on this board), but I could not get the screen back so I restarted and when it came back up the computer didn't recognize the modem. I called tech support and they had me do a few things, including a system restore, BUT SYSTEM RESTORE IS NOT WORKING EITHER!.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. They want me to send it in for repairs, but I need it for school.
