Rescue and Recovery Backup Settings

I've got some questions about the backup settings. Where are the backups stored? In what format (is it some kind of a compressed batch of files)? What's a good recommendation to set these to?

I have a USB2 HDD I use special for R&R backup.
It's can restore the system in full from the date
of the backup. It's bootable, even the blue button
is not work, or put a new HDD at you TP. It's still can
boot & restore.
The USB2 EXt HDD is so cheap today, it's the best
way to backup, fast & reliable.
For myself, I go for a bit more luxury, My USB2 HDD is using
2.5" Notebook HDD, No power is need & can easy carry together
when I am on the trip!
