I would never ever get a glossy screen if I could get a matte one. I want to see what is on the screen, not my face and whats going on behind me. And where is the use of a notebook when you have to adjust your seating so you do not get reflections? ...

Oh, by the way concerning widescreen: anyone using a messanger like gaim or the like or lots of linux console will love it, I think. window on the left, console+gaim on the right. Thats my everyday setup.

Matte screens also suffer when there is a strong source of light directly behind you. You don't get reflections, like on a glossy screen, instead the light just spreads in all direction, completely washing out the image and making it unusable, forcing you to adjust the screen. However, this requires a tad more extreme conditions than the conditions that will cause reflections on a glossy screen.

I'd love it, unfortunately I am used to working with maximized windows all the time. I wish there was some setting where you could force "maximization" to a desired target size. Then I could "maximize" my main working window, and leave a tad free desktop on the right for the secondary windows.

depending on which model you orders you can still get a flexview display..

also there are a few 15 inch flexview still ahnging around..
depending on stock available..

According to http://www.shopblt.com, the ETA is May 8th for topseller T61s with 14.1 WXGA+ screens.

Under the availability section, it states, "Models with NVIDIA graphics and Windows Vista 64-bit or XP Pro will be available in July 2007." These are probably the "p" models. Too bad. This page is for the Asian market specifically, so perhaps the availability in the US will be different.

Also note that the 14" widescreen is 13.2" x 9.3", which is slightly wider and shallower than the 14" 4:3 models which are about 12.2" x 10.0". Total area is roughly identical at about 122".

And still no DVI. Grrrr...

That's a bit disappointing that there's no actual increase from 1400x1050.

I quite welcome the change to nvidia, but we are yet to see if they will just be offering the new Intel Integrated as well as the Quadros as someone else has stated.

Disappointment in not seeing the IBM logo, that's quite stupid if they're actually going ahead with removing that. IBM is a trusted, world recognised brand.

I don't see what's so great about offering Firewire, even Apple are forsaking the standard, and it's only 'a' spec and not 'b'.

It's a good idea to have Full Disk Encryption drives on offer, almost no performance penalty is a massive advance.

Memory Card Reader is a great addition.

Not sure if having Vista 64-bit is good, still not very wide adoption of 64-bit.

We'll just have to see.

Quite right, but they're getting rid of OEM XP in January to standardise on Vista, so might as well get it now, while you don't have to pay for a premium.

They have a 1680x1050 option in the T61
Afterall, T61 doesn't look that bad, I think it looks good, although not as slim: the form of keyboard bezel especially at the edge makes it ILLUSIVELY looks FATTER. Also the upper screen thicker bezel should be due to the addition of webcam next to the Thinklight
I have to touch the thing before I can really say anything concrete about it, still have 1-2 months to wait to touch that

Though heavier, there should be some substantial overall improvement in performance. For me, I concern most about vertical screen asset:
900 (WXGA+) > 800 (WXGA) > 768 (XGA)
1050 (WSXGA+) = 1050 (SXGA+) [or do they have a WUXGA 1200?]

For me... I want taller screen... displaying two pages side by side in tiny 14" screen will make my eyes sore...

Is the webcam standard on T series?

I see what you mean about it, I too would have to feel one before I buy it. Is there anywhere in the UK that have Thinkpad T series on display?

The 15.4" T61p will have a 1920x1200 WUXGA panel available (according to a university's sales program info-leak.)

I'm hoping it's a brighter panel than the 175 nit Samsung on the Z61p. If it is, count me in!

Any brighter than the screen on my T41p will do me just nicely, it doesn't have to be IPS bright, I just would like people to stop slating my Thinkpad just because of the dim screen.

silly question here. but

regarding the new t61 with their 15.4 and 14.1 wide screen options.

the base of the computer is the same size regardless, so am i correct to assume the 14inch monitor will just have more black space around the screen than the 15? because this is so apparently enormously ugly, why wouldn't people just go for the 15.4 and be done with it. 1 more inch, who cares, - less black space.

The base size will be different depending on the display size. This is true for the current 14.1", 15.0" and 15.4" WS units as well.

thanks for that update.
didn't know that.

i would never consider hacking up a piece of hardware such as this or any laptop, i buy it as a package and thats it.

but with the bad move lenovo made with the widescreen only option, id seriously consider grabbing a t60p 4:3 loaded and swapping out the mb, or proc if i could. its upsetting that 4:3 is gone. out of all companies- ! course it aint IBM anymore without their logo - regardless IMHO..

had a maxed out 15" IPS t60p stolen from my car few weeks ago. they hit the gold mine. looked like a school bag, unsuspecting, inside was the new t60p, pair of 300$ Shure earphones, ipod, all my cables, checkbook, and business folder of irreplaceable documents.

lesson learned. i was hoping to get another 15" with a slimmer carry case for my back or what not, ill never leave another laptop in an unattended car. thank the lord for my backups, i only lost a laptop, but have the data.. its given me a nice fresh start on life, quite literally.

OUCH! That is so sad! I hope you can find a nice machine, and importantly, you can afford it.

I am so completely posssessive and protective of my T60 to the extent that my roomates think I am going nuts. After all, it is my costliest and most valued personal item ever and is going to remain that way for quite some time.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I never leave anything, even a jacket, exposed to public view in a car. Good thing you had the data backed up. Maybe there was some insurance coverage (car or homeowner/renters) that might apply? Many years ago, I once had a bunch of stuff stolen from my car and hotel room and my renters insurance covered it (minus the deductible of course).

This is the first time they are offering the Turbo Memory. If I understand this correctly, this SHOULD speed up boot times but I do not know of any other purpose (perhaps lower power consumption due to reduced hd access).

Not sure about the SD though. My guess would be the PC Card Slot & Media Card Slot [add $0.00] but it is definitely not the Smart Card slot.

Wouldn't it be a fair test if they also compare other laptops? Usually, these reviews compare 3-4 laptops and then give an 'editor's choice' awards or something, right? They say that battery life is bad, and still they give out an award?

They did—they compared the HP Pavilion HDX9000, HP Pavilion dv2500t, Fujitsu Lifebook A6030, and the Dell Latitude D630, as well as the T61.
