Where to get DVD-rom drive for slimbay T60, or.... ??

Since my DVD-ram drive (Matshita UJ-842) is limited to 4 changes and there does not appear to be a way to unlock the drive or to hack it, I need to find a different DVD-rom type drive to use for playing DVD movies. Where I live DVDs come in several different region codes so I need flexibility.

Would an external USB type drive work?? I suppose so. (Duh.)

Anybody with a similar problem, and how did you solve it??
