Vista -> XP downgrade

#1 Post by Vaz » Tue Mar 13, 2007 1:59 am

Assuming T60 now comes with Vista Business ed preinstalled, I would like to downgrade to XP. Make recovery CD/DVDs of Vista installation and then install XP.

Question when I want to go back to Vista in future (SP1/SP2 whatever) is that will XP install clobber recovery partition or not? And if it doesn't clobber, then will I be able to access the recovery partition via boot F key (or is it Thinkadvatage button?)

If I were in your position, this is what I would do:

Keep the 'old' Vista HD intact and replace the hard disk with another one, on which you can install what you like.
Then, when the time is ripe (probably after Vista/SP2 has come out), swap HDs again, update the original and install whatever other apps you need.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Don't think that is an option to me. Obtaining Vista Recovery CD/DVD from Lenovo is cheaper than getting 2nd HDD. And storing 1st HDD in cupboard is bit silly to me at least.

burn recovery cd's using rescue and recovery, this will be your vista backup, then wipe the whole drive and install xp. if you ever decide to go back to vista you have the recovery cd's handy...

Lenovo will sell you a machine with your choice of XP or Vista, and that this will continue at least until SP1 and probably beyond.

One of the advantages of dealing with a company that is bidness oriented, rather than consumer oriented.

Too true, and a good thing! I see in Information Week today that NIST (part of Department of Commerce) has banned Vista, Office 2007 and Explorer 7, at least for the near term future.

Vista is incompatible with critical business apps; Outlook 2007 cannot read all prior versions of Outlook HTML mail properly; IE 7 (I am using it) breaks a number of website operations (improving slowly).

So until things move into harmony and compliance, I am pleased that we can continue to buy XP preloads. ... JD Hurst
