T60P Widescreen Concerns

#1 Post by skibbz » Tue Mar 13, 2007 8:52 pm

After a couple months of research I felt I had finally settled on the T60P widescreen instead of the ASUS V1JP, HP NC8430, and Dell D820. I recently came across all of the threads on the Samsung/LG screen quality differences. Now I am concerned, since I do not want a subpar laptop screen because I will be spending countless hours developing software on it, watching DVDs, etc. I definitely fall into the category of people that would be disappointed with a poor screen, since I am a videophile and will be hooking up a high quality external LCD while using the built in LCD at the same time for dual monitor functionality.

1. Can I return the laptop unopened to Lenovo for an exchange if I find that the model sent to me is Samsung, based on the serial number on the box?

2. Do I have to cover return shipping costs?

Thanks,
Matt

Bummer... I guess I may not get a ThinkPad after all. It's not worth paying tax to Lenovo on the item, then potentially the shipping cost multiple times.

Thanks for the info!

Well, standard shipping is free for online purchases from Lenovo. But you would have to pay for return shipping in case you plan on exchanging/returning it.

perhaps a good onlne vendor..?
where you can get the s/n BEFORE you order the thinkpad..
no sales tax and easier to deal with..
also, look around for a local retailer..
office depot i think..
and, rumor has it, maybe more coming..

if i could afford another two new thinkpads i would do a comparison..
but i think three is sufficient..
its hard to believe that lenovo would release a thinkpad with a substandard display..

I just did this recently and Lenovo paid the return shipping costs. I don't know if that's standard practice - I may have been lucky.

Well, with the additional discount going on right now I couldn't pass up a T60P widescreen with the alumni discount. I just ordered an 8744-J2U - T7200, 2GB, 15.4 WSXGA, Bluetooth, Fingerprint, 100GB 7200, 9 cell, etc.

I tried calling Euclid to see if they would be willing to check the parts list prior to shipping to make sure it was an LG screen and not a Samsung, but I got the impression that they usually just drop ship from Lenovo. I figured I may as well just cut out the middle man since there didn't appear to be any benefit to me and the price was $200 higher (although tax from Lenovo was ~$150, it was still $50 cheaper direct).

Thanks for the help! I'll post my raves and/or rants in a few days

I currently am in the process of returning my t60 widescreen unopened b/c it came equipped w/ the Samsung screen--I was sent labels by Lenovo so Lenovo is covering UPS ground costs to return to them, for me at least (dunno if that is standard policy or exception).

Eek, I hope this doesn't indicate that a lot of their stock on hand at the moment have Samsung screen!

I also have requested all information possible regarding the 15.4 screens from the wharehouse department (specifically inquiring into a side by side comparison of specifications b/w the 2 screens). Currenlty, my request is being processed by a rep and I will be sure to post any results, as soon as they become available.

I talked with a sales rep who stated that Lenovo has a 21 day exchange policy, so I can open the box and check it out and exchange it for another one if there are any issues with it. He would not give me any details on the dead pixel policy. If I can exchange it for any reason within 21 days though, I feel very confident ordering directly through Lenovo. I've never owned a monitor or laptop with any pixel issues, although one of my Dell LCDs at work has a bright red pixel that is annoying. I am paying a premium for a ThinkPad and I expect a premium product. :D

I got the LG screen! :D

Let's just hope it doesn't have any dead pixels when it arrives next week.

Thanks for the information!
