swap 15" uxga from t42p to t60p?

#1 Post by gene303 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 3:48 pm

Guys,

I have a t42p with a flawless display and a t60p with a single dead pixel. I mostly use the t60p day to day and the dead pixel just keeps staring at me and taunting me. I'd like to swap out the panels. Is this possible or are the actual panels somehow different? I'm sure the part numbers are different, but arent these supposed to be the same uxga IPS screens or do they have a different interace because the t42p is agp and the t60p is pci-express? Any speculations on how to make it work or why it wouldn't are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

15" T42p = IDtech
15" T60p = BOE-Hydis

Both are 2 channel LVDS and has nothing to do with AGP or PCI-E. The interface may or may not be the same, the biggest concern would be if the LCD cable enters the lid at the same exact spot on both screens - if not the swap won't work. As far as i know, they still use a 30 pin interface, but i'm not sure if the outline is the same, sorry.

Are you sure it's a dead pixel, and not just the ultranav bug?

I'm under the impression that the BOE-Hydis screen is the better image quality screen - what's your impression comparing the two?

Maybe IBM Will Replace?

#3 Post by gene303 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 5:44 pm

I think its actually not one dead pixel, but a cluster of 4 black pixels. Its like a little square. I see that the lenovo website says you need a minimum of 12 for a replacement. Does anyone think its worthwhile calling and complaining to see if they will replace? If it was really just a single dead pixel or stuck for that matter, i would not complain but this is exactly the size of a sentence period. It is a big annoying black blotch. It was enough that my screen sparkles like a Christmas tree and now this. Any ideas on how to ge the nice folks at ez-serv to replace this dud for me?

Troels,

Thanks for the reply. The cables are indeed in separate places. The quality difference is mostly indistinguishable to my eyes . . . and these are a discerning pair of eyes. Both of the screens have equally good color saturation and good whites, though they are both sparkly and maybe the t60p screen just a tad more so. I'm a law student and i scanned all my books for reading on the comp. I stare at black on white most of the day and it does not tire my eyes too much (though the fake tears might help). Being that the cables are at different places I guess it won't be possible to do a swap. Any advice on how to play it with IBM? Should I upgrade my warranty, just tell them my display is bust and have an on-site come and replace it? I hate lying, but I can't afford a screen replacement and this is driving me bonkers and I know it will distract me when I read.

Oh, and no. Its not the nav driver bug. I just tried a linux live cd and the annoyance is there in full force. When you look at the dead pixel it looks like it is deeper in the screen than all the visible pixels. I guess the visible pixels project light at the surface layer of the lcd and therefore appear closer. Thanks.

I have no experience with EZserv or the US Thinkpad division, so i can't help much.

But i think they must have a policy regarding the number of dead pixels per area, 4 pixels next to each other is many. How annoying it must be to read texts and think that it is a punctuation. Call them and ask. Even tell them that you can't use the screen for your work because of this.

One more piece of bad news is that neither Idtech or BOE-Hydis manufacture IPS screens any longer, so IBM/Lenovo may not have much stock left. :(

In fact BOE-Hydis went bankrupt, Chimei sold all their stocks in IDtech and many of their plants were sold to Sony.

Sometimes LCD manufacturers make exceptions to their # of dead pixel rules when they are predominantly at the center of the screen, or if they are clustered very close together. Lenovo's rules probably mandate more than 4, but if they're really in a cluster, they make make an exception.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, its a sad story, thinking that something is a punctuation when its not. Its actually the truth. Often it will line up above a period and it will look like there is a colon when there is not.

Unfortunately lenovo policy is that you must have 16 dead pixels and they don't appear to make exceptions as per this link [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4U9P53] I'm just going to call them and tell them that the LCD is broken and when they ask me what is wrong I will tell them that it doesn't work and I will emphasize that it must be the lcd because when I plug in to my screen I have no problems. So, I guess I'm just going to try to pull a bill clinton. I will ask for an on-site tech and I won't let him leave until he replaces the LCD. At least that is the plan. Cheers guys.

Guy, guess what. Another funky pixel just popped up--a red one. At this rate I'll have the requisite 16 in no time.
