So is the 1600 x 1200 uxga IPS display in the T60P (the Hydis) much better than the sxga+ LG philips in the T60 ?
The sxga+ resolution sure seems like a nice fit for font size in windows etc. and I fear that the uxga resolution will make everything too small.
But then I do need the best available laptop display for photo editing and that will be my top priority.

As a bonus question, since if I need to go with the T60P it will have to be a second hand unit because of price.
I am looking at one with the old core duo 2.13 ghz, firegl card and 2 gb ram vs a new T60 with core 2 cpu @ 2ghz , x1400 and 2 gb. These two machines will cost me about the same.
So will the slightly high clock of the T60p make up for the advantages in the newer core 2 cpu or is there a significant difference I should be aware of ?
I guess the fireGL gpu is quite a bit faster than the x1400 but heard bad things about the compability with some games (I do like the occasional game).

Unfortunately I can only answer one part your question - the CPUs will perform near identical. Heck, 2.0 and 2.13 of the same family CPU would also perform near identical. That really should have no aspect in your decision making process

I too have heard about the capabilities issue of the 5250, but can't verify it. x1400 can play any game on the market, just not high res + settings

I have a Z61p (1920x1200 WUXGA LG Phillips) and a T60P (1600x1200 UXGA Hydis). I do think the Hydis looks better, but not significantly (mostly it is just a brighter screen). As far as the smallness of text, that really is a personal thing. I don't have perfect vision, but I like the WUXGA over the WSXGA. Mostly, this is because I do a lot of programming and research and want to have multiple windows open side by side with out scrolling left/right to see their contents.

As far as the difference between the CPUs go, most hardware review sites stated there is about a 10% difference in performance between a CoreDuo and a Core2Duo. Which should mean that a 2.16Ghz CoreDuo will perform similarly to a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo. However, there are two other reasons the Core2Duo might be still perferable - the Core2Duo at 2.0Ghz should have a lower power consumption then the 2.16 CoreDuo. And the bigger reason in my mind is that the Core2Duo has the 64bit instruction set. Now, this is not really an issue if you don't run a 64bit operating system (ex. Linux x86_64 or Windows XP/Vista 64bit).

The final question, I don't play a lot of games on either laptops (they both have V5200s FireGL), But, I have loaded SimCity4 and Civilization 4. They both seem to run fine. Also, the FireGL card is evidently a X1600 with specialized drivers. You can download Omega drivers which will allow your FireGL to be treated as a X1600. I have not tried this, so I don't know what performance gain there is.

If you run Vista, get the HIGHEST resolution possible. Vista has scalable font support, so you can run at UXGA. increase the font size, and still get the benefits of a high-res screen.

Have you really seen a QXGA R50p running Vista with the Aero interface? To support QXGA, Aero requires at least 256MB of graphics memory, which I don't think the R50p has.

But I do agree that the higher the resolution the better, up to a point (i.e. WUXGA on a 15.4" screen -- QXGA on 15" is too much!). Whether or not a screen has Flexview is of secondary importance to me.
