T60 widescreen from Costco

#1 Post by firefan » Wed Mar 21, 2007 1:11 pm

Hello,

I am interested in this 15.4" T60 (Model 8744-5BU) from Costco online:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... 4017751&Mo
=11&pos=5&No=1&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=56110&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&ec=&topnav=

My questions regarding this model are:

1) This comes with XP Pro and I will be reloading it with Vista (with drivers downloaded from Lenovo). Any issues with this?

2) TABOOK says that it has a DB-15 video connector (2 rows) but I have seen pictures of it with a "regular" VGA connector (3 rows). Which is it? (I prefer the regular VGA connector)

3) Will my current T42p's Ultrabay with a PATA HDD work on it? YES

4) Will my current T42p's Port Replicator II work on it? (I found one post on this forum that says "no").

5) It comes with a regular (Depot?) 3 year warranty. What is the turn around time for the service? Is it upgradeable to an onsite warranty? (I am unable to find information on this on the Lenovo site.)

Any other comments/suggestions welcome. Thank you very much!

does costco's "return it any time for any reason" policy apply to this T60? that would be cool.

I don't think your port replicator will work.

I had to buy a new one when I upgraded my T40 to my T60p.

upgrade to vista should be fine; i have a 8744-J2U and although tabook says it has DB-15, mine is VGA; you should be able to upgrade to onsite warranty via the website or by calling them

costco recently updated their return policy

if you're anal about the LCD screen, do an online check of the laptop's serial number to make sure it's an LG panel.

also, if you order online via directlenovo.com/public you can get the 8744-J2U for the same price. it already has Vista Business loaded and comes with 2GB RAM and an upgraded graphics card. the hard drive is slightly smaller but faster. free shipping too.

I"m curious, what in particular in the serial number gives the LCD manufacturer?

I think they meant a 3-row VGA connector by DB-15 in TABOOK, as in http://www.cabletechguide.com/Technical ... inouts.htm

What's the difference between LG and non-LG LCDs? Reliability? Brightness?

from what i've read, Lenovo uses LG and Samsung displays for the 15.4 widescreen. some users that have the Samsung have complained about the quality of the display (light leakage, graininess, etc.) while others are completely satisfied with it. LG is supposed to be the better of the two. there are many threads in this forum that talk about this and how to determine what manufacturer made your parts.
