I'm trying to record something through the "red" mic/line in port (next to the "green" out-to-speaker port). However, the sound was distorted because the internal mic (the 2-little-tiny holes right underneath the left Fn button) was still on and recorded the sound from the speakers. How do I turn it off?

Assuming you are running Windows and you have the volume icon in the system tray, double-click it. That should open the Master Volume panel.

If you see the Microphone slider, click the Mute button and you should be done.

If you do not see Microphone, click Options, then click the box next to Microphone and click the OK button. This will show the Microphone slider where you can then Mute it.

ray, will that not mute the external mic too?

I'm assuming that the jack in the laptop is actually only a "line-in" input and controlled by its own slider. If the OP can try what I suggest, we'll see what happens!

Nope already tried that before posting,

the "red" input is actually the mic/line-in input combination also, which you can hook up another external mic to have clearer and better conversation, however the internal mic is another mic (which acts as "speaker phone")

There has already a post which said that the mute function in the volume control only mute the speaker, it did not actually mute the mic itself (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... light=mute)

If you open Volume Control, on the left select Options > Properties, and there are checkboxes for Recording and Playback. Does this help any?

Try this (Xp, I don't know about Vista).

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Device Properties (Audio tab or Voice Tab). This lets you select the default recording device. Maybe you need to deselect the internal mic as a source in one of the tabs.

I don't have a laptop with a built in Mic but I would expect to find a reference to it there. I can select to use either my Webcam Mic or Line in input Mic (SoundMax audio) on my laptop from there.

Nope. None of these methods worked since I did try them all before posting. It seems not that easy and obvious guys.

Plus, I'm looking at these "Show hidden devices" in Start - My Com. - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager and not find anything regarded that internal mic.

Please at least read through the posts and replies before reply repeated-non-working-thread.

spt60, When you connect a microphone to the external mic/line port the internal mic should be disconnected automatical by a mechanical switch built into external mic/line port. It is not intended that internal and external mics be on at the same time. If this is occuring on your t60 then it is likely that the mic/line port is faulty. Try another external mic and if the same thing happens contact lenovo for a repair.
BTW, how do you know the internal mic is on when external mic is plugged in? Distortion can be caused by other problems.

When you plug a microphone into the red port, it automatically mutes the onboard microphone. I just tested this on my T60p. If yours is not doing this, perhaps you have a hardware problem.

I confirm this - I just made a guitar recording on my T60 using both the internal and external microphones seperately, and once I plug an external mic, the internal one is muted automatically.

Hmm... interesting... I was making a keyboard recording

I realize the distortion by the "high-pitch-treble-sound" for every key I played. This certainly didn't happen as I plug it directly to the speakers. What might cause this?

Try turning the output from the keyboard down, it may be distorting the input. Also, make sure the Microphone boost is off under Advanced Properties of the mic in the sound volume app.

What does this mean, "turning the output from the keyboard down"? Where would one do this?

I think my system is one of the defective ones, since the internal mic is not automatically muted when I plug in an external mic, and there appears to be no way of disabling it without also disabling the line-in.

So is there really a set of defective line-ins, or is this all just a misconfiguration?

He meant spt60's musical keyboard. Apparently there's no line-out happening there.

Well, I still need to find a way to mute the internal microphone.

When I use Teamspeak (an audio conferencing app) while playing video games, they can hear me just fine through my plugged-in mic, but whenever I type something, the built-in mic picks up my keystrokes, annoying my teammates.

So, any way to mute the internal microphone WITHOUT also muting the line-in?

When you plug in an external mic (the red jack) its supposed to mute the internal one.

I'll get on the horn with Lenovo Support...

Other than this issue, I love my T60p.
