I recently received my Thinkpad T60p back from Lenovo after having them replace the mobo.

I kept the hard drive and when I went to put it back (in the primary slot, not the 2ndary drive), and booted up, I now get the following error:

"ERROR"
"2100: HDD0 (Hard disk drive) initialization error (1)


"Press <ESC> to continue"

The exact model # is 2623-D8U

Unfortunately I cannot try to mount this drive in any other computer because the [censored] thing has a proprietary connection that is specific to the Thinkpad, unlike other instances of the same Hitachi drive which can be put in an external USB drive enclosure.

Any idea what I'm up against here?

I think that update relates specifically to Vista, but I am using XP Pro.

Think it might still work? Is there anyway to just mount and format the drive?

Ok so I updated the Bios, and that didn't work.

So I went into the BIOS and tried the Hard Drive Diagnostic tool. It reported that it couldn't even see my hard drive.

So either my hard drive is messed up or the connection port inside the laptop is messed up.

I do not have a T60, but your post is the first I have read concerning a propriatary connector on T60 hard drives. Perhaps you are confusing SATA and PATA? SATA drives have a different connection than PATA drives, but they are just the wave of the future. Other notebook makers also use SATA drives. You can also buy external SATA USB enclosures.

I suspect that one of the following is occurring in your case.
1) The connector from the hard drive is not connected properly to the connector in the T60. Either you need to push it in a little bit further or you have not lined up the pins of the connector of the hard drive with the connector on the motherboard.
2) (speculation) Lenovo has begun whitelisting their own branded hard drives in the BIOS. I have not heard of this happening except with the T43's. I doubt that Lenovo would so short-sighted to do this.
3) If you had a Hard Drive Password set in the BIOS, I believe you need to set it in the new motherboard BIOS.

EDIT: Actually the Hard Drive Password does not seem likely as the culprit because the BIOS should still be able to "see" the hard drive, password or not. I have not used Hard Drive Passwords to know exactly how the BIOS would react to a hard drive that was password protected.

FWIW, I use the original Hitachi HD, a Fujitsu HD and a Toshiba HD interchangably in my T60 HD Bay with no problems. I also use all 3 in a external USB Drive Case without problems.

Just to confirm, I have also changed my HDD and have not seen any problems like what has been experienced with the T43s.

Ok it seems that I got confused, it's a SATA (wide/extended?) connection.

Unfortunately I don't have any SATA cables to test it out in my desktop.

I have a question with your use of the original hdd, i am trying to do the same with a t30 hdd in an enclosure and use with a t40 to get the pictures that i have on the old t30 drive, i installed it and the t40 recognizes it but it does not show up on my computer or anywhere else, is there anything that i must do so that it will be recognized as an external hdd? thanks for the help
