OK....this is weird....

#1 Post by NRM » Sun Mar 25, 2007 4:42 pm

I just got a bunch of updates from ThinkVantage, and now all icons (the Lime for limewire, the world/fox for firefox) are mysteriously gone and replaced with the icon used when the computer doesn't recognize the program. Any suggestions?

*Luckily, I performed a backup just before i updated...

Are you running Vista or XP? If you are running XP download tweakUI -Windows Powertoys- there is an option in there to repair desktop icons that works great. Available at the MS website.

I have TweakUI and I tried that, but it fixed the vast minority of icons. How can i get the rest back?

Provided you can still launch the programs from the Start menu, have you tried manually deleting and then re-creating the shortcuts? First delete the faulty ones by right clicking on them and selecting Delete. Then from the Start menu navigate to the program shortcut, right click and select "Send To" -> "Desktop (Create shortcut)."

If this doesn't work either you can perhaps re-install the applications.

Do the icons that are faulty still take you to the program, perhaps the path got corrupted.

If you delete IconCache.db (C:\Documents and Settings\*your user name*\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db), Windows will re-build it and correct the Icon assignments after several boots. (This will be the largest of the IconCache.db files)

Note: After deleting IconCache.db, To trigger the re-build of IconCache.db, you can change a icon assigned to a Desktop Shortcut. Then power down and power up the computer and the IconCache.db will be re-built. Then, you can change the Icon back to the original.
