New T60 - a few words

#1 Post by Torque » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:27 pm

Hi!

I recieved my new T60 this monday, after selling my Macbook Pro.

Specs: 1,83 Core Duo, 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HDD, 14,1" 1400x1050 screen, DVD burner.

Being a former Thinkpad user (T41p, T43) I'd like make a short verdict of my impressions after a couple of days.

Build:
It's certainly built better than my previous T4x thinkpads. The frame feels alot stiffer and more rugged. It doesn't have near the same amount of flex that my previous thinkpads had. Actually, it's one of the most consistent laptops I've ever had in my hands. The keyboard is also more firm than the ones I had earlier, doesn't "click" alot. It's amazing!

Screen:
The 14,1" screen looks pretty much the same as the previous ones. The two Thinkpads before this one had the same screens. My only hickup with it is that is looks a little "blue" in colours - like the old ones. The Mac had better colours.

Software:
Is it just me, is there more IBM/Lenovo software preinstalled now than ever? Alot of bloatware, in my opinion. So I'm looking forward to a fresh install of XP.

Heat and noise:
The T60 makes more noise than the previous T4x machines somehow. It's certainly more noticeable when in a quiet room. The CPU temp seems fine, usually between 45 and 50 degrees celcius, but the GPU is always above 60 degrees - I guess this is what triggers it. However, I've learnt to live with it - after tweaking the temps in tpfancontrol and ignoring the battery and GPU heat sensors.

How does this new T60 compare to the Macbook Pro that you just sold?

Does the right palmrest get very warm? My T60's right palmrest gets quite hot when the wireless card is on and while it's tolerable right now, I am worried that it might feel very uncomfortable in the summer.

PW:

It feels about the same. The MBP is extremely stiff and non-flexible due to the aluminium exoskeleton.

The right palmrest gets a little warm, but nothing special.

Kwoon, I don't see why the right palmrest would get hot due to the wireless card being on, that would seem to be more related to the HD working hard. The wireless card is in the very back and the WAN card is on the left. HD directly under right palmrest.

pianowizard, the right palmrest on my T60 gets only slightly warm if at all - it is much, much less than my X31's temp. after 2 hrs of use!

Thanks for the correction, Mike. I am remembering how I got that wrong. It's the X60s (which I owned for about two months) that has a wireless card underneath the right palm rest and causes a lot of heat. Somehow I thought that the T60 also has a wireless card in that same area, and so I blamed that for the heat.

A lot of people complain about that, but honestly even after owning two T60's with totally different specs/model; I have never experienced this issue, especially in a quiet environment.

Although, I'm left hander, even so I never felt any heat on palm rest region. It could just be due to your body heat too. By the way if you guys really would to get some heat, try AMD Sempron 3400+ notebook, it will melt you.
