I am thoroughly impressed with my T60 now that I have Windows Server 2003 SP2 running. The fan whistle is almost gone. Overall my system is quieter when compared to XP SP2 with the same settings. However any flavor of linux for now is still loud. Just wanted to throw this out there.

Why would the fan be quieter? Does it run at a different speed? Does it run hotter?

All I know is that when I run XP SP2 my fan is on all the time and I get this high pitched squeal from the fan area. When I have Server 2003 SP2 the noise is gone. I am using the default Maximum Performance power scheme in both XP and Server. I didn't install anything to check the fan rpm or check the cpu/gpu temps. In any flavor of Linux I've used I get an annoying high pitched noise from the fan area which is non-existent in Windows Server 2003. Why? I don't know and I don't care anymore since it's quite.

Guess the kernel of the 2003 is far more robust and consume more efficiently the machine resources. I remember making the comparison on my A22e, running a stock Windows 98 install, the fan did come more often than when I installed Windows 2000

EDIT: I found out that using Server 2003 as a Workstation you will have a much responsive, faster and stable OS.

I would take a copy from a friend and see how W2K3 performs, I vaguely remember using it, but was not impressed by all the server features, although booting was faster than XP!

Is the Fan more quiet or is it less running, or both?

How is the power consumption and batterie time compared to xp?

I have been running Server all day with VMware going 100% and my T60 is quieter than it ever was under XP and Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04. I am running at Max Performance. I use to get this high pitched noise from the fan area and it would drive me nuts. The noise is still there however it is much much more subdued. Like I said I enjoy my T60 a lot more now running Server 2003 SP2. I hope others have the same experience that I do with Server 2003 SP2.

battery life appears to be slightly improved for me. I used to get 2:45 if i was lucky, I get about 3hrs now.

Just a warning for those considering this.

I had Win2k3 installed on a desktop that previously had WinXP on it. I simply loved it.. except for the fact that for whatever reason, DVD playback under that OS was laggy and stuttered.

This was a few months ago, but I'm usually pretty good about working out the kinks of an OS to get it working the way I liked, and no matter what I tried, I simply couldn't get DVD playback to work correctly.

Other than this one problem, the OS offered by far the best computing experience I've had, but ultimately the DVD issue made me switch back.

But sure to install latest graphic card drivers for you video card and also enable hardware acceleration in device properties as it's disabled by default on server 2003!

I'm using w2k sp2 on a secondary hdd with my tp and never had this problems with dvd playback or games. But you have to remember that if you're going the server way you may experience problems installing some applications as they check for os version. Especially anti-virus is a common problem but also TrueImage is a candidate which won't let you install it's bits on server 2003.

Yeah, I'm positive I enabled hardware acceleration with the latest drivers for my graphic card.

I actually think the problem was that I didn't enable something through via DXDIAG, as I'm reading through the site you posted and some other sites found through google, and that's about the only thing that doesn't sound familiar lol.

This thread really caught my interest.. I think I'm going to try installing Win2k3 again.

I have access to windows server 2003 from my school. I will be getting a ultrabay HDD adapter this week, and I am going to try this out on my T60 in a couple of weeks after my exams are over. Windows server 2003 is a nice OS and I really like it.
