GPU temp

#1 Post by Rwang » Mon Apr 02, 2007 3:11 pm

Why is my t60p's GPU temp almost always high (65+) enough to trigger the fan? I barely run any 2D apps beyond Word, acrobat etc, almost never 3D apps.

I already set ATI Powerplay to "Optimal Battery Life" on AC. But it doesn't seem to always stay there. And I also set Thinkpad Power manager to CPU low for AC. Any other ways to cut down the temperature of the GPU? Underclocking? but how?

65C is normal temperature for the ATI GPU on the T60. Don't worry about it.

I know some folks whose GPU temps go to 100C while doing some intensive 3D modeling. It doesn't stay there for sustained periods though, and the fan takes care of things. It is the processor temperatures you should worry about more ... if it stays under control I guess things are allright. How soon does your temperatures spike to 95C - if it is after 2-3 hours into the game, I'd say it is ok.

Axiom, I don't play games that much, and would rather have a quieter fan. I still need advice as to how to reduce the GPU temperature, hopefully never above 65C when I run just office apps.

Rwang, does it go above 65C at all? My T60 hovers between 60-65C on normal usage (browsing, pdf and music).

Do you guys find the bottom of T60 very hot?

My T42 has an ATI MR9600. The GPU idles at 51'C with fan off. Even at 51'C I find the bottom of the thinkpad too hot. Room temperature is around 23'C.

sugo, the T60s bottom never get hot at all. I use on my lap most of the time at home and it is pretty cool even when I run simulations.

not a big deal, as long as it is still covered by warranty
1. T43 2668-B97 14" SXGA+ 1.5G RAM 9cells
2. X60s 1703-CA3 powerful
