Display resolution changes by itself!

Hi all,

I have my display settings set to 1400x1050. Everything usually works fine...no problems.

Once in a while (maybe twice a week or so) I turn on my computer in the morning, and my display has changed to 1280x1024! If I then restart windows (without changing the display settings back to normal), the display will then go back to 1400x1050 by itself.

Anyone have an idea of what's going on?

I am running Windows XP SP2 on my T60.

actually that happened to me today . 3 times in a row.
I found out that what possible caused it is this.

what happened was that I turned on my notebook and then closed the lid and had some dinner.
After I ate after about 20 minutes I picked up my notebook, went up the stairs and opened the lid.

When I opened it, my resolution somehow changed to 1280x1024 and my icons were all disorganized.
I thought something weird just happened, so Just change it back to 1400x1050 and arranged my icons again.

I did the same thing, closed the lid wait a few minutes and then go down the stairs open the lid and then resolution went down to 1280x1024 and icons screwed up again.

I have Active protection enabled. but I do not know if that is the culprit or if it is stand by mode, or screen saver. I just dont know.

anyone else?

It's not the APS. It's the closing lid problem. Every time I leave it with the lid closed and then open it again. The screen changes to 1280x1024 while the setting says 1400X1050. Weird.

well I am still uncertain on what causes this, but when my resolution changed to 1280x1024, i checked the display properties and it was changed to 1280x1024.
I had to change it back to 1400x1050.

Weird.
I was not able to replicate it again. but I will try replicate again now.

try to do a BIOS reset and it might fix it!

I found out when my resolution changes

My notebook is first turned off.
1. I turn it on and then immediately close the lid.
2. I wait about 15 minutes.
3 I open the lid and log in as normal.

This is what it should be:

Could be anything from overlaping of two display drivers, abnormal registry (which btw almost all microsoft windows love to do), another program causing it (as i see you are in some sort of photography or designing field), to improperly configured display options.

Possible Solutions:

1. Bios update.
2. Update drivers through thinkVantage and make sure you don't have drivers installed by yourself from ATI.
3. Running Registry cleaner might help too.
4. Check accessibility/Catalyst display center to see if haven't created different display profiles.

and you cannot display pics in the topic without prior warning in the first subject line otherwise they'll be disabled so please do so.

1. Did BIOS Update.
2. updated all drivers and dont have any drivers installed by myself for ATI
3. did not try registry cleaner yet
4. no display profiles created.

I found that that when I turn on the notebook and close the lid and wait a few minutes and then log in, the screen somehow defaults to 1280x1024 and icon all over the place.
so what I did was not do anything and just restart the computer and everything was back to normal.

I think the issue is when on the start up screen and you do not log in for a while, it somehow defaults to that resolution.

I have never, ever seen than happen with a thinkpad. I have a suggestion for you:

Try creating a custom profile using Presentation manager (Fn-F7) for your LCD and use your laptop with that. That should solve your problem ... but I dont know why this happens ...

an btw, Clarkent, cool username ... Do you have a lois to dote on?

do you have a T60?
Possibly some other people can try this:
1. start your notebook.
2. when log on screen appears, just close the lid and wait 10 - 15 minutes.
3. then, open the lid and log on as normal
4. then check if resolution did not change.

anyone please let me know.

I just tried it and nothing happens - the screen resolution does not change. I tried it on my X31, nothing there either.

I have a similar problem with my T60, but I suspect it's to do with the graphics card drivers I'm using. I'm use the Omega drivers (X1400 graphics card). Howevr, I'm loathe to change them over to the official ATI ones since I don't want to be dealing with all the Catalyst crap bundled with it.

same thing happens to my T42 and X41... I try not to close the lid when the laptop is on.

you can close the lid anytime once you log in, haha.
As I stated, it seems like on the LOG ON screen, something is glitchy when it idles for a while on the log on screen.

I have the OEM graphics drivers from lenovo and didn't install the ATI drivers because I thought these OEM drivers were good enough.

I might test some other drivers out.
As I do not usually turn on my notebook and leave it on log on, this is more of a great annoyance than anything else.

Anyone else with more input would be great, thanks!
