Hard to say, and I do not know about Vista. However, Microsoft has stated that Service Pack 3 for XP will be available in 2009. SP2 was a re-write of XP so who knows what SP3 will bring.

Arrgh, I meant - no SPs for Vista. My bad, I wasn't clear enough.

As to the SP3 for XP - highly doubt they'll do a rewrite, given that 2009 will be 2 years since the release of Vista and next-gen OS in works. BTW, could you provide the link to this MS statement?

Isn't that what they always do - provide updates for older systems? I mean - they still release patches for Windows 2000, given that it's been 7 years already

I was clear about your question as it pertained to Vista, but I don't know about andy Vista Service Pack strategy from Microsoft.

I read about SP3 for XP in one of the many articles about Vista. It was meant to allay fears about being forced into Vista. I don't have a link, however, as the articles are long gone from any history in my browser.

The first thing I did with my T60p out of the box was to insert the Vista DVD and boot the computer, I chose new install which formatted the hard drive and installed Vista Ultimate. After that I downloaded Lenovo's update utility which found and installed all the necessary drivers and Lenovo based programs (Access, protection, backup ... etc). Then I noticed a weak signal strength , I went to Intel’s website and downloaded the most recent driver (Still not showing in Lenovo’s website) which resolved the signal strength issue. Then I proceeded to install MS Office 2007, Endnote X, JMP 6, KasperSky AV, Napster, PocketMirror (for palm device) and few other programs and never looked back. I noticed (with other computers I worked with) that a clean install is always the best way to go for stability, and the Lenovo system update utility makes it easy to update drivers so you don’t have to search for them.

I have used Vista on my TP for the last 4 month. Had many problems regarding the hardware at first but after Lenovo released their Vista drivers it was way better.

Now after 2 month since consumer release things are stabilizing and if you only use latest software i would recommend moving to Vista.

I'm using it for ensuring my programms run well on Vista. But for now i have reverted back to XP as there are still some annoyances which all add up and slow down my productivity.

Especially i had bad experiences with Adobe, Macromedia and some other special software which had some glitches here and there. But most important i couldn't successfully use my Cisco vpn with Vista. Even that they are now on RC builds but there are still issues with it.

Just my 2 cents.
