Mysterious Wlan / power problem

#1 Post by JensJohansson » Thu Apr 05, 2007 10:13 pm

On switching power source from AC to battery while the machine was on, the wlan would just completely die .. would not find any networks whatsoever. It was the darndest thing. Power was on, the interface was there in the system properties, the light was on etc. Didn't see any signal whatsoever.

This happened after waking up from hibernation as well.

I am using all the preinstalled.. stuff (thinkvantage access connections etc, that weird fingerprint logon, etc)

Only thing that helped was reboot.

I twiddled with a few things in the "thinkvantage access connections" and I think it works now (knock on wood).

If i remember..

Configure->Location Switching...

UNCHECKED Enable automatic location switching

Configure->Global settings...

CHECKED allow wireless connection at windows logon
UNCHECKED close all wireless connections when user logs off
UNCHECKED Enable automatic wireless LAN control

I also may have twiddled with the power save option in this particular wlan connection's power saver settings.

Plus I switched off windows firewall -shrug-

Could any of this be related to the problems I had or would I have been just as well off if I had been sacrificing some small animals (or small plants, for any vegetarians out there)??

I.e. .... might the problems come back when I want them to come back the least?

Cheers,

I tried sacrificing a steak. The steak was pretty good, but the problem still seems to be there. Sometimes i can reproduce it, sometimes not. It's something with power management!!

Some points:

1) I managed to HAVE the problem ("totally deaf" WLAN interface) when booting from battery power.

2) I managed to "wake up" the deaf WLAN interface without rebooting by this procedure: "uninstall" .. in the device manager.. add new hardware in control panel. This was running on battery.. I also had bluetooth off at the time.

I'll guess I'll try eye of toad and gizzards of a bat next...

I noticed there are three threads regarding this, perhaps there is a way they can be merged?

This is kind of stupid .. it's supposed to work, dammit??! How can they ship machines with wireless cards that just drop when you suspend them? I wonder if anyone from Lenovo reads this forum ....

Jens - Thanks for sharing your experience. I have the same problem with a similar t60p.

Are you able to get your screen to 100% brightness when running on battery?

I'm can't do this, and it's making me think that both problems are being caused by some overriding power management "feature" (or driver deficiency) I can't find. So it would help to know if others are experiencing the same thing.

Regards,

- Jamie

There is a bios setting for this.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Thanks very much, Gator. I found it.

I think I've fixed my "no wireless on battery" trouble too (at least I'm connected without AC right now).

Relevant settings (I think):

Intel Pro/1000 PL (driver ver. 9.2.50.0):
- Advanced tab:
-- Smart Power Down - Disabled
-- Deep Smart Power Down - Disabled
- Power management tab
-- Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power - Off

11 a/b/g/n Wireless Lan Mini-PCI Express Adapter (Atheros 6.0.2.75):
- Power Save Mode - Off

I also changed the SmartStep Bios setting for battery power to "Automatic".
