HELP!!! My T60 suddenly won't support my monitor's res!

When I turned on my computer this morning, I noticed that the resolution setting wasn't correct. I looked to change it back to 1680x1050, but noticed it was already there. After messing around with the settings to try and trick it back into the correct resolution, it was still incorrect. It appears to be 1680x1050, but it's not all on the visible part of my screen (I have to move my mouse to the sides of the screen to reveal the sides). I tried restarting, and the 'auto image adjust' function on my monitor, but to no avail. This has never happened before. What could be wrong?
Edit: My computer thinks there is only 1440x900 pixels available on my screen, instead of 1680x1050

Are you running Linux by chance?
Also, are you getting the same result without the external monitor too?

1. If you've recently updated the FiregL drivers, then revert back to see the changes.
2. Check settings in Catalyst Control Center for external display.
3. If things were working smoothly before with usual settings, I suspect it's the problem with the monitor, get it checked up.
4. If somehow, you have access to another monitor like in office, friends, neighbors, try to hook up their to see the result.

Open the Display Properties. Select the screen to which your monitor is connected. Click the Advanced button. Go to the Monitor tab. There is a list of devices - click the one that matches your monitor.
You should be back to normal behavior.

When I do that, my list under "monitor type" is "Thinkpad Display 1400x1050" followed by "Default Monitor" followed by "Default Monitor". It's on "Thinkpad Display 1400x1050", and when I try to change it, nothing happens. After I click OK on that screen then OK on display properties, and then go back into this menu, it has reverted back to "Thinkpad Display 1400x1050". This is really strange...

New development:
it appears my computer stopped recognizing the monitor, and I needed a new driver. I updated everything, and it still does not work.
However, in my list of monitors under desktop settings---> advanced--->monitors, my monitor is now listed.
It lets me select it and press OK, but as soon as i click the advanced button again, it has reverted back to the "Thinkpad Display 1400x1050". What the hell!?!?!?
This is similar to (but far more annoying) than the way my computer chooses to disable my static ip every time i restart. It just keeps going back to "obtain IP address automatically". It doesn't save my settings.

I have this happen to my external monitor from time to time. The solution I use is to close the lid of my laptop and open it up (if its open) or open the lid and close it again if its closed. Works everytime for me.

Have you tried to use Presentation Director to configure everything? If not do you have it installed?
Could be the Presentation Director fighting with ATI to setup display properties and winning the control.
