14.1” SXGA+, 15” SXGA+ & UXGA FlexView/IPS still availab

#1 Post by Johan » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:08 am

Greetings!

Recently, there has been much debate here about Lenovo’s decision to discontinue manufacturing ThinkPad's with SXGA+ FlexView/IPS displays, and I understand that these models are already no longer available in the USA – obviously to the regret of many users. The below is just meant as a hint to those (in the USA or elsewhere) who really want a brand new T60 with a SXGA+ FlexView/IPS display… this is still possible!

Which may apparently not be widely known, Lenovo are in fact still selling T60’s with both 14.1” SXGA+ displays and 15” SXGA+ FlexView/IPS displays, and even (at least) a single T60p with a 15" 1600x1200 UXGA FlexView/IPS display, but for some unknown (at least, to me!) reason these models are offered here in Europe, while not in the USA. I don’t know for how long this will continue, but according to a recent Lenovo Product Roadmap (which I found at http://lpn.dk/files/showcase/lenovo%20s ... andout.zip) the 15” T60’s will only be available throughout second and third quarter of 2007 (see page 19)… so perhaps it’s best not to hesitate too long! :D

In Denmark quite a few T60’s with 14.1” SXGA+ or 15” SXGA+ FlexView/IPS displays are presently available; the most interesting (from an economical point of view!) are those selected by Lenovo as TopSeller’s – see the Lenovo’s TopSeller selection/price list as of April 2007 here:
http://lpn.dk/files/prisliste/top_selle ... 0tier2.zip The prices listed therein as ”ESP” are suggested retail in DKK, ex. Danish VAT (exchange rate today being: 1 DKK = 0,1795 USD, and 1 USD = 5,57 DKK). The actual retail prices on the (Danish) internet are slightly lower; e.g. one week ago I paid DKK 11.812 (ex. VAT) for the T60 model 2007QPG P/N UT0QPDK (Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0 GHz, w/15” SXGA+ FlexView/IPS display); the suggested retail price for this is listed to 13.520 DKK (ex. VAT) in the Lenovo TopSeller pricelist. The DKK 11.812 translates to USD 2.120 (according to http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic). Lenovo’s complete pricelist (as of March 2, 2007) can be found at http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03004c/tools/ ... ntid=37455 but note that the non-TopSeller’s are significantly more expensive compared to the TopSeller-models (many carry a completely weird price-tag; again I don’t know why, and how to deal with this).

To get an impression of the actual (internet-) price of the various Danish Lenovo models, a number of very competitive Danish internet shops may be found at e.g. http://www.edbpriser.dk/Products/Showsu ... .asp?ID=48 (select ”AVANCERET”) – this page is quite good, however it may require a slight amount of guesswork for non-Danes… :D

If English-speaking people really want a T60 of any of the models discussed here, I guess that it would be most logical to buy if from England (via the internet… this ought to be possible?), owing to language of the OS and the keyboard layout. Unfortunately, I don’t know how complicated this might be in reality; issues with freight, deduction of foreign tax(es), warranty-issues; if anybody know about this, they might want to share… otherwise we’ll have to ask for help of some Genuine English Gentlemen! :D

From what I guess is the British Lenovo "TopSeller's" – found at http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/ ... d+T+Series I find the following ThinkPad T60 model: UT0FVUK (Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz) with a 15" 1400x1050 SXGA+ FlexView/IPS display, priced at £1.270 (ex. VAT), translating to approx. 2.500 USD. Surprisingly, this is significantly more expensive compared to ”my” Danish T60 which even had better specs (!?!).

Other British T60/T60p's with SXGA+ or UXGA resolution are those mentioned below - from http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/ ... d+T+Series

Hope the above may be of some help or inspiration to someone…

PS: Does anybody have any suggestion(s) about how/where to find an either new or very well-kept T42p (with 15” FlexView/IPS display, either SXGA+ or UXGA, and preferably at least 2 GHz), apart from at eBay? TIA!

Regards,

Johan

Forgive me my ignorance, but - how do you tell who is the manufacturer of the LCD? I still cannot let go of my T42 with 1400x1050, but considering swapping it with some X series machine.

Being US resident - no, I didn't. Too much hassle with shipping and warranty.

T60 14" SXGA+ and 15" SXGA+ FlexView are still listed in shops here in Czech Republic but its actual availability is questionable (notes like "further shipments not confirmed"). T60p UXGA has disappeared few months ago.

There are still a lot of laptops with Flexview offered on Lenovo Canada. It should be cheaper to purchase from there compared to the EU because of lower taxes and shipping costs.

Here are all the models with Flexview offered on the Lenovo Canada website:

2623K8U - CAN$1849 (web price)
200752U - CAN$1899 (web price)
200754U - CAN$1999 (web price)
200753U - CAN$2049 (web price)
200755U - CAN$2049 (web price)
20075BU - CAN$2099 (web price)
20075HU - CAN$2129 (web price)
2623KLU - CAN$2199 (web price)
20075QU - CAN$2319 (web price)
20075YU - CAN$2439 (web price)
200775U - CAN$2449 (web price)
200773U - CAN$2499 (web price)
200772U - CAN$2599 (web price)
T43 266885U - CAN$2599 (web price) <-- I doubt this is still available
20075TU - CAN$2789 (web price)
2007N5U - CAN$2839 (web price)
20077JU - CAN$2879 (web price)
20077KU - CAN$3059 (web price)
20077EU - CAN$3139 (web price)

These prices do not include tax (which is 6% for Alberta, and 14% for most of the other provinces). The currency conversion to US$ is approximately 0.88.

The 2623 series are Intel Core 2 Duo and are TopSeller Selections, but do not offer warranty service in most of Asia/Europe.
The 2007 series are Intel Core Duo and offer warranty service pretty much everywhere ThinkPads are sold.

As for availability of 15" SXGA+ FlexView in the U.S. read recent comment from Tim Supples (Lenovo):

That might be a very good price, depending on the warranty and the condition of laptop. I paid more for my T60 with SXGA+ (core duo) with similar specs last fall. Where did you get it?

It says sealed/brand new with 3 yr warranty. I was listed for 'buy it now" for $1999 and I just sent an offer for $1860 and he accepted, sent payment today. glad to hear it's a decent price... :)

Basically, mack warranty is an "international warranty" on your electronic items like cameras, laptops etc offered by a shady company. There are many sellers on ebay who sell thinkpads with "3 year warranty" and the fine print says it is mack warranty and not from IBM. To cut things short, it is a scam.

I just checked the other auction and it seems legit. IIRC, the exact config tou bought cost around $2500 last august. I think $1860 is a very good price for this config, esp with the UXGA screen.

I see.

Thanks for checking up on the auction. I'll post when I get it and everything's OK. My first regular thinkpad (not counting x60t I just sold)

I'm so sorry but I got very confused!! how was the 14.1" model included here? It didn't say anything about Flexview/IPS?
How do we know if something is Flexview? or anything with SXGA+ is safely considered as Flexview?

A store in Indonesia offered me:
Product: ThinkPad T60 2007-E68
Original description: Based on 2007-7JA: T7400(2.16GHz), 1GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless(a-disabled), Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

He said this is a Flexview, but I don't see anywhere written IPS/Flexview

Thanks

jlingo:

With respect to whether 14.1" SXGA+ displays are available in FlexView/IPS (or not!), check the second entry (by gator) in this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=40742 - then you'll understand why nothing about FlexView is mentioned in connection with 14.1" displays in my above post.

Apparently, there seems to be a lot of confusion, if even IBM claims that 14.1" SXGA+ displays are available in FlexView/IPS! Check the official Lenovo reference for yourself; the TAbook - get it here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

Best regards,

It could still be "old" stock, as you could go to USA lenovo's website and buy a core duo WUXGA until pretty late last year. Many resellers still have them, but you can not order one directly from Lenovo (at least in the US). It does not mean the machine is used, only that it was manufactured awhile ago.

It will be interesting to see how up to date the software on the machine is. If everything is pretty much up to date, then it would seem that it is a new machine. Although, that begs the question as to why Lenovo would sell CoreDuo's with WUXGA but not Core2Duos.
