Lenovo 300 vs Thinkpad

I placed an order for Thinkpad t60. I have seen the Lenovo 300s at Office Depot and I must say the built quality is bad. The lenovo 300 looks like it is made of cheap material. I am just wondering if the Thinkpad t60 has a better built. It is also sad to hear that the Thinkpad t60's 14 sxga is bad. I am really hoping to buy a computer for quality.

I also bought a gateway e 100m and the body is solid. I wonder if anyone can compare the gateway with the thinkpad.

My T60 is very solid. Lenovo makes a dud occasionally, but usually Thinkpads are built better than other brands.

It is also sad to hear that the Thinkpad t60's 14 sxga is bad.

"Bad" is a highly subjective term. I like my T60's 14" SXGA+ very much. People who are extremely picky might call it bad, but it's good enough for the average user.

Lenovo 3000 is totally consumer oriented series with most features of it's Thinkpad counterparts. So you can expect some degraded built qualiy.

Nothing is bad about "T60 14 sxga", different models are targeted at users according to their needs.

Also, T60 is solid as rock and is very robust in built quality.


I wonder what made you order a T60 at first place if you still have quality/built concerns about it?

Regarding the build quality.

I have a T60p and a Z61p. The T60p uses CFRP as it's case material, and then a "ruberized" paint that has been standard on the T series for some time. The system is solid and I have no issues with the build.

On the other hand is the now discontinued z61p, it uses ABS plastic for the casing which is the same a the Lenovo 3000 series. Now, I will for say this casing "looks" cheap. But, at least for the Z61p it is still a solid platform, and have no issues with the build quality.

Since ABS is weaker the CFRP (for the same thickness), the Z61p has a noticibly thicker casing, which I imagine is to make it close to the sturdyness of the T60p. I have never played witth a Lenovo 3000N, so I can't really comment on its build, but I am happy with the T60p and Z61p.

I have used an N100 myself, and I have to admit that was 1 of the only solidly built consumer laptops I have seen.

If you disregard certain soft parts of the casing, say the lower end of the lid between the hinges, the accessible doors at the bottom. The case is really stiff. There is never any creaking sound, when you hold the laptop at one end horizontally, there is no bending whatsoever. Ever though the case is made out of cheap plastic, it's very well built. If I can't afford a ThinkPad but in need of a laptop, I would get an N100.
