@garnet:

Your LCD is TN and not IPS.

Having said that, these are probably the best TN panels seen on a ThinkPad, and there are no WS IPS panels for 15.4" size for you to swap yours with anyway...

Great thread. I've learned a lot from many knowledgeable posters. Many thanks.

I've got a T60p, 2623DDU, with the 15.4" flexview, and it's been great for going on 5 years now. A lot of usage. Average 12 hours a day of up-time. Nothing too heavy duty except for the occasional 35 tab Firefox, while running mostly youtube-type videos and tutoring my son and other students.

I've got the ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5200 w/ 512 MB of RAM ("Hypermemory"); last bios date is from 2007/05/02, BIOS Version 009.012.001.021.
My current T60p BIOS date is from April 1 of 2010, 79ETE6WW, v. 2.26.

I've got two questions:

1. Regarding the screen, it still retains the beautiful clarity of color it has always had, but it seems to be slowing dimming in intensity. It never was the brightest screen on the block, but the color and detail of the screen make it the best panel screen I've ever owned (CART screens are still the best). From reading above posts it seems LCD dimming happens over time. One odd thing is that a poster above said he went into the BIOS and changed the Display settings to "Maximum", and that he found the display stronger (on his particular T60p, which he bought second-hand), so much so that he "lowered the screen brightness to number 7". Well, on my machine that is the *highest* setting for the screen brightness I can get. And always has been, afaik. How do I get it to go *above* 7??

2. On a tangentially related but directly unrelated note -- since I just now went into my BIOS to make this Display Brightness change from "Normal" to "Maximum" -- I was hit by something that happens to me very often when I go into the BIOS: when I go into the BIOS my machine immediately overheats. I can hear the fan going from my normal BIOS controlled setting (usually running at around 3450 RPM) to almost no fan at all; this happens *only* when I am in the BIOS. When WinXP is up, it runs perfectly. But the apparent fan-off mode the computer goes into when I'm in the BIOS does cause my machine to heat up very quickly, the end result being that many times I cannot boot up. The boot gets to a very dark "Windows XP" boot up screen, then freezes there. I have to do a hard shut-down (I *hate* having to do that) and let it cool for 15+ minutes.
Reasons for this fan-off and system over-hearing during BIOS time?? Solutions??

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
Small correction first: you have a 15" IPS screen (not 15.4", which does not exist with IPS).

1) To get the new-style OSD, you need to update the Hotkey Features: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-74261

2) After all these years, you should remove keyboard and palmrest, then the CPU-cooler.
Clean off the old (probably dried-out) thermal paste from both CPU and fan with e.g. isopropyl alcohol.
Hold the fan itself while you blow out the fan-casing with compressed air.
Put on a VERY thin layer of Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on only the CPU (no more AS5 than the size of a rice corn, spread out with an old credit card).
That should take care of the overheating.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the welcome. As for the correction, indeed, you are right. I've been reading so much about 15.4" screens lately, I got lulled to sleep. :SH!: Won't happen again.

Now, the new-style OSD is not the problem -- I've had that for some time now -- but my brightness just maxes out at "7", doesn't go any higher. I'm not saying my display is dark in any way, but during the day-time it does seem a little hard to read when the room is brightly lit. Not much, just a little. I tried changing the display brightness default in the bios, from "normal" to "maximum", but that did nothing. (Bios says it will prevent the screen from getting less than max in battery mode, and that's true; I just tested it. But it does nothing about expanding my current overall brightness.) [Related but slightly off topic: my son got a new T410 in the mail today, and I checked it out. Screen is a lower-end 1280X800 res. It is bright! Yeah, that's what I'm talking about! And it goes all the way up to "15", whereas mine stops at 7. But on the down-side, it's viewing angles are very poor compared with my flexview. No comparison. If you center dead-on with this T410 screen, it looks very good. But if only a few degrees one way or other and then picture immediately washes out.]

Question: is this problem also evident in the modern "high end" 1080p screens going into Thinkpads or elsewhere these days?? Yes, I'm living in a bubble and don't get to see many screens in my normal life schedule. (I'm currently in South Korea, and have little time for comparison shopping.) I've heard a lot about the "state of the art" screens on the top-end HP workstations, have similar technology as the flexview. Are they the best screens today??

As for the over-heating, I'll give that a go. It's been a couple of years since the box has been opened. Time for a spring cleaning. Compressed air, isopropyl, and some Artic Silver. Sounds like a winner.

What screen exactly would one use for such a mod? There were never any 14" IPS screens....don't know about PVA but haven't heard of any...

How do the new 1080p Thinkpad screens compare with the older Thinkpad IPS flexview screens?? I have not had a 1080p screen in Thinkpad form factor to compare with my UXGA T60p flexview.

Thanks.

Little update here: I just took the good advice above and did a clean-out of my T60p. Blew out the last couple of years of dust and other crud. Got down to the CPU and cleaned it off, the fan connection, too. Tons of old thermal paste there. I couldn't find any Artic Silver, so I got the best paste I could find -- Zalman ZM-STG2 -- and put on the very fine layer, CPU only. I'm pleased to report that my CPU is running 10 degrees cooler!

... and it turns out Zalman ZM-STG2 is pretty decent thermal paste, too. Good news. I didn't know that. The kids at computer city did right by me!

This seems to be the official thread for T60/p panels, so I'd like to add some info I could not find here:
Neil wrote:As far as I know, all SXGA+ and UXGA 15" T60 had IPS Flexview technology.
(The laptop would not turn on and I was unable to determine the panel type from the model no.)

Props to Neil for the speedy+helpful reply in my other thread. :D

I'm not Neil but...

That's NOT a proper Lenovo-issued panel. Stay away from it.

Most of LCDs on feebay are "compatible" garbage. You need a genuine product, with a FRU number.

Good luck.

Hello all, I haven't read this entire thread (yet) but it should be posted here that there are a number of very reputable forum members who sell and resell Thinkpad parts. A PM to "Brad" will usually get a quick and helpful reply and posting a WTB in the marketplace usually works too.

Steven you are going to really like that screen and it's pretty easy to install, just take your time and document where all those tiny screws go.

I bought one from him not to long ago for my T60 and it was at my doorstep within 3 days form Taiwan

That T60 is now my wife's since her Dell died and I just purchased a T60p to replace it which is coming with a SXGA+ screen so depending on the condition I just may be doing business with him again.

I, too, purchased a BOE Hydis screen (HV150UX1-100) 1.5 years ago, from this Taiwanese seller and was very happy with the received item. Alas that T60p (FireGL V5200) is now with my sibling and I now have a T60p with FireGL V5250.

After maxing out all the components, I had wanted a SXGA+ FlexView rather than BOE HV150UX1-101 with UXGA as I had found the resolution to be a little too high as my eye sight is beginning to fade. I know it is possible to tweak the DPI etc etc but I would rather prefer to have the original settings.
After reading somewhere that it was possible to fix the "Yellowing" issue of the LG SXGA+, I went and purchased a CCFL and replace this LG lamp.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90382

I was extremely surprised with the result, like a new SXGA+ flexView screen.
I would also like to reiterate that it would be far less stressful/irritating to just replace the screen with a new BOE Hydis, rather than opening the old screen to fix the issue.

Hello!

I have an Ibm T60 - 2007cto
My screen went wrong (LTD 141en9b Fru 42t0373)
I just bought a new one (Samsung LTN 141P4-l02 Fru 11p8348)
I have some problems with the screen. Only red color is shown, and the resolution is like 640x480. I use the stock inverter. Is there any possibility to make the new screen work correctly?

Welcome to the forum savaria...
It looks like your "new" LCD panel was built for the T4x series, and while it will fit into a T60, it does not have an EDID chip. If you want to use this panel you will have to add the chip to it, and program the chip with the code from a T60 panel. There is a how-to thread here somewhere about doing just that. But, it would be much easier to get the correct panel.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Yes, all of them have that chip.
If you buy off eBay, do NOT buy a "100% compatible LCD", ONLY buy an original/genuine IBM/Lenovo LCD with IBM/Lenovo P/N or FRU (the numbers from that list above).

I am too, on the market for a replacement LCD for my T60p. From research I found quite a number of websites that sell the SXGA+ resolution, (UXGA is a bit to high for my eyes), such as this one:

http://www.smartmicrousa.com/HV150P01_LCD_SCREEN.aspx
or
http://www.screentekinc.com/LG_Philips- ... (K1).shtml
Last place also carries a A2K2, not sure what the difference is.

If the model number matches with the FRU, does it mean that it is compatible with my laptop? For example, on Thinkwiki LG-Phillip LP150E05-A2K1 is listed as 13N7078. Would I run into issues if I buy a LP150E05-A2K1 LCD not a 13N7078 LCD?
