R51 to T60... is the model I've chosen alright?

I Currently have an R51, basic config is
Celeron 1.33Mhz
512 DDR Ram 400 MHz
40 Gb Hdd
Dvd Combro Drive
Wifi

I finally decided to get one of those great T60s. The basic details are
Intel Core 2 Duo T5500(1.66Ghz,667Mhz)
1 GB DDR Ram 2,
100GB HDD,
DVD-CDRW Combo,
14.1" XGA TFT
Li lon 6 cell
Gigabit Ethernet
56Kbps Modem,
Wireless Antenna
Intel Pro Wireless 802.11b/g,
Type II PC Card slot ( PCMCIA Slot),
Two ExpressCard/54 slot,
Fingerprint Reader,
Security Chip,
Bluetooth,
Active Protection System,
2.34Kg,
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950,
Windows XP Professional, 3 Years CCI warranty

I've upgraded the Ram and HDD of this T60...
Is it a good choice?

Compared to your old machine, I think you'll very much enjoy your new one.

In my opinion (and others certainly will not likely care) there are two things that I would not like about this configuration:

T5500 processor - I would have wanted the T7200 or better. The T7200 has 4mb cache and runs at 2.0Ghz.

XGA screen - I would have wanted SXGA+

But, if neither of those two things are a concern, or in the increase in price for those two things is significant then I am sure you'll be extremely happy with your new machine.

I'm ok with the 2mb cache, my r51 has just 1mb.... also i hate widescreens..... this one is gonna cost me close to over 2000 usd.... same config from other companies is available for about 1300 max but im obsessed with IBMs and non widescreens

SXGA+ is not widescreen. It's still a 4:3 aspect ratio, but has 87% more pixels than the XGA that you got, so that you would be able to view almost twice as much information on the screen, e.g. two web browsers instead of just one.

Minor point, SXGA+ is a non-widescreen format, just a higher resolution. It is WSXGA+ that is the widescreen version.....

Anyway, enjoy your new system, I am sure you will.

aah ok... i feel dumb... wats an XGA then? they dont even have this Sxga here... How about the battery life? my old one was supposed to give me 3 hrs, i get 1.5 max...

XGA = 1024x768 pixels
SXGA = 1280x1024 pixels (doesn't exist for Thinkpads)
SXGA+ = 1400x1050 pixels

I just went to Lenovo's India site and indeed they only sell XGA Thinkpads! That's not fair to you guys!

You can achieve the officially published battery life only if: 1) the battery is brand new, 2) you minimize the brightness of the display, and 3) turn off the wireless card.

It would be whatever Lenovo says, provided that you dim the screen all the way down and turn off the wireless card.

But XGA on a 14.1" screen isn't the end of the world. It's even worse having XGA on a 15" screen!

i would go with the atheros/ibm wifi card. i currently have the intel pro wireless card, but i would rather go with the ibm one (because it's better for os x). i think the website doesn't do a good job explaining between the different wifi options, but they all should work fine for day to day wifi

other than that, the specs look fine

It will be a great machine if you like XGA, which some people do as it is easier on the eyeballs. XP will run great on it so there should be no problems. What would the price be in US$$$.???

The suggestion about the atheros is a good one as mine came with the intel and now I have the atheros and have much better connectivity.

This Sony is much more appealing indeed (especially in terms of weight, size and display resolution), but is also pricier. And of course, everyone says Thinkpads have much better quality than Sony laptops. You made the right choice, I think.

$2000+ US will get you a much nicer Thinkpad in the states. Im running a T60 with SXGA+ and an x1400 graphics card, which would cost less than 2000 now (though when I got it it retailed slightly over $2000.

thanks guys.... this is what i figured.... i like 1024x800 res, I run a web branding firm and thats the start off standard for most websites we design. My desktop at work has a 1024x800 too and I'm pretty used to it now....

Also, I hate gaming, i think its a waste of time... so the intel 950 gfx really doesnt make a difference to me....

I finally ordered it with 1.5 gigs of ram and a 100gig hdd....

I usually just check my mails, do a little photoshop work, chat with clients, skype.... surf a lot..... this laptop should blow my mind right? (i know its a bit late to ask)

this is the new config for the same price.... eta - 4 days

Hey guys, thanks a lot, i finally got it today. its amazing! I love it... so light, so slim.... Was a little disappointed on how long xp took to start up though but then I noticed a lot of lenovo and thinkcenter icons loading when the computer starts.... just need to figure out which ones i need and which ones i dont, feel free to let me in....

You guys pretty much walked me into a decision im glad i made
