Linux + T60 Intel Pro 1000 = Perfect Nightmare !!

#1 Post by TeeSixty » Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:12 am

Hi All,

For the past week i've been struggling to get Ubuntu 7.04 or OpenSuSe detect the intel pro 1000 network on my T60 2007-62U. The weird thing is that it it worked fine on Ubuntu 6.10 which drives me to the conclusion that its something to do with the kernel!!

Heres the steps i've done so far all of which failed:

1) Reinstalled the linux e1000 driver from intel.com
2) Applied the command rmmprobe 1000 and modprobe 1000
3) The output from sudo lshw -C network is:

Code: Select all

*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Ethernet controller
product: 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@02:00.0
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: cap_list
configuration: latency=0
resources: iomemory:ee000000-ee01ffff ioport:3000-301f irq:16
4) The output from sudo dhclient eth0 is:

Code: Select all

wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801
Bind socket to interface: No such device
I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help me out here! Thanks.

HI,

Unfortunately I don't have a thinkpad yet (waiting for the T61) but when I get mine the first thing I will do is putting Gentoo on it :)

I just checked my kernel (2.6.18), and the Intel pro 1000 driver is included there. So if you configure your kernel make sure the driver is included (either as a module or compiled-in). Also, can you please post the dmesg output after you execute "modprobe e1000", this usually gives better clues on what is going wrong.

I hope this will fix your problem, Intel drivers for linux a usually very good and personally I "love" them for releasing open source drivers for their products.

Hi there..

Let me show you the steps i've taken so far:

1) Reinstalled the e1000 driver from intel but i got the following error message "cannot write to /var/cache/man/cat7/e1000.7.gz"

2) Applied the script from Lenovo that is supposed to fix a similar problem (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67166). But that didn't work and got the error message: eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

3) in regards to the modprobe e1000, i didnt want to paste the whole output because its long but i found the following entry:

Code: Select all

[ 3.320000] Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 7.3.15-k2-NAPI
[ 3.320000] Copyright (c) 1999-2006 Intel Corporation.
This means it has detected the son of a gun !! But it ain't loading it? Any idea ? Should i roll back to another kernel? If so how? I am new to this btw, so any installation steps will be highly appreciated.

I don't know what's wrong with your machine
the stock e1000 driver comes with Feisty works flawlessly on my t60p, also type 2007
The performance for 100mbps mode almost doubles what I got on the factory XP (ie. 11.4MB VS 6.5MB)
