has anyone run into this? i have the latest drivers and all the software from lenovo. also check the bios everything looks right. why is windows keeping from using my trackpoint?
when i hit fn-f8, the button option (only track pad) is selected. if i choose the middle option (only trackpoint) the track pad stops working (as expected) but the trackpoint doesn't work either. if I try to choose the first option (both enabled) it does not stay selected, it automatically goes back to the buttom option.
not here

It works for me, fn F8 toggles like it should and everything work like it should, I think the driver for the trackpoint driver is not working like it should. I recommend downloading the trackpoint driver and updating that driver using Win Device Mgr

I dont mean to insult your Intelligence but please follow the steps
- go device manager and uninstall and delete the Think Pad Ultra Nav pointing device
reboot
find new hardware in the device manager again and point it to the new driver, my driver is 9.1.3.0 form synaptics
Driver available here

Had a similar issue after a clean install of Vista Ultimate and updating everything via SystemUpdate. In my case, I downloaded the ultra-nav driver AND utlity program from lenovo's driver matrix, and installed them both by hand - and then rebooted. After that, it worked fine.

I just went through both of your suggestions and neither worked. i still can't select the first option in the ultranav device settings and the trackpoint is still grayed out in the mouse properties.
Is this an upgrade to Vista...?

I suspect that this is an upgrade to Vista from XP Pro.
If so, then there might be issues related to this involving applications and driver compatability issues beyond just Trackpoint.

One last idea, do you have the "Lenovo System Interface Driver" installed?
available here

"This is a necessary program for ThinkPad and 3000 systems. This program is used by many other programs. This package provides the following utility program for Microsoft Windows Vista users.."

i installed the interface driver. it did not help my trackpoint issue at all and actually made things worse because now i can not connect to my wireless network.

At this point, I'd try to start over from scratch. Here was my "clean install" experience of Vista Ultimate:
Copy the intel SATA drivers to a USB key.
Insert vista install DVD, reboot.
select partition, format it. Then remember to do the 'have disc' thing for the SATA driver (had to browse to the driver.)
Install vista... nearly everything worked out of the box...
Install thinkpad System update.
Install whatever I wanted from the system update.
Update vista with MS patches (windows update)
Notice that while the trackpad/trackpoint work, its not using the ultranav driver. Try SU again, install more stuff
Still not using the proper driver - go to thinkpad driver matrix (on lenovo/ibm site) and download both the ultranav driver and utility program...
Run both of the above exe's. For each, this is a two step process: running the EXE only extract's the contents of the archive into \drivers\win. After that's done, manually go into the proper subdirectory (\drivers\win\unav.v32 followed by \drivers\win\unavutil) and run 'setup.exe'. Note that I did NOT reboot between installing the driver and util program - but did reboot after both were installed.
Finally, all is good.

Remove the device as well as the software in add remove programs.
Even though you did remove the device you also need to remove the Trackpoint software as well. If this does not work, call IBM and ask for escalated tech support. If you do not, you will have to go through basic help desk support which might involve someone reading flowcharts with the end result being no resolution.
When you do get it resolved, please post here and let us know what the procedural solution was.
peace,
