Restore to factory default image?

#1 Post by radbobdad » Sun Apr 22, 2007 5:01 pm

I have a new T60 that has, since I received it, hung when recovering from hibernate, after I scan my fingerprint and enter my passphrase to get back into my session. It just shows the desktop background forever. I suspect the problems started when I tried to do a software update and it went into hibernation in the middle. I had to reboot it when it hung upon recovery, and it's been confused ever since.

I've dinked with it enough now that it's pretty hosed (followed tech support's instructions and tried to uninstall the fingerprint software and install the newest version from the website - bad idea if you don't disable the security policy first). When it came back up the fingerprint reader only works occasionally - mostly doesn't even notice my fingerprint scan. I now managed to disable the security policy that uses the fingerprint reader, although it still pops up periodically and tells me to scan my fingerprint, then is OK when I simply check "I'm having trouble with my scanner" and click OK. I'd like to reset and start over.

Is there a way to restore to a factory default image and start over? Unfortunately I didn't make a backup to DVD right away - wish I had.

The reason a backup CD is not supplied is that the recovery system is preloaded onto the hard drive. I don't know about a T60, but with a modern T4x you press the Access IBM button. That will bring up a menu from which you can restore to factory condition. Pressing F11 while starting up (before the OS starts to load) should do the same thing. ... JDH
