Hows the performance in Vista with the ATI X1400 128? With Aero etc. Would it be worth it to go with the Fire GL 256?

My T60 2007-FUG (14", X1400 128MB, C2D 1,83GHz) works fine with Vista, scored four (out of five) in its benchmark, the weakest part being the ATI card though. With lots of RAM (1.5GB+), the X1400 is more than enough.

I have that exact configuration (x1400 and 14" sxga) and I am happy with it. It also scored 4 out of 5 on the benchmark. I am not a gamer, so... I am more than satisfied.

T60 14,1" SXGA+, compared to my two years old Prestigio ("brand") laptop's 15" SXGA+... well it's about the same. Slightly lower max brightness, slightly better colours. But TNs are TNs.
I don't complain though, no one offers better with this dimensions and weight. If you can get 15" FlexView, don't mind the added weight and shorter battery life, and can afford it - then it's the best. For me, I do mind the first two factors.

For a 14in screen SXGA+ should be a high enough pixel density for most people. I have a 15in SXGA+ screen (flexview), and I know it is certainly good enough for me.

Also, any DX9c graphics cards should have no problem with Aero, the x1400 included (I have at times used beta versions of Vista with smooth graphics).
