Any one know where I can get hold of the Seagate 160GB 7200RPM drive - ST9160823ASG ?

You can try CDW or UpgradeNation.com. They both say call for availability.

ebay got many Seagate in 160GB 7200RPM but i'm not sure if it has the particular model you're looking for.

Thanks - not the right one .... it maybe a little too early to see them yet ... but I'm hoping that since reviews have been written about them, someone should be able to source them.

I got mine from Macsales.com, they seem to have stock when nobody else does. Apart from the space it's about 25% faster than a 7k100 too.

Are we talking about the same drive here, 2.5" sata for a laptop ?

Oh yeah. SATA 7200RPM 160GB from Seagate, got mine 2 weeks ago - I had been searching froogle daily with the part number plus 'in stock'. Been in my T60p ever since, though there's still one unknown device in Device Manager driving me crazy :)

ignoring for the moment the difference in capacity, what makes this new drive faster/better than a 7200.1 or a 7k100?

You can't ignore the difference in capacity - it's the increase in data density on the platter that makes the transfer rate faster than a 7k100.
