T60 USB underpowered or cautious?

Hi,
I happened to get a Nokia USB phone charger for the USB port on my T60...which would be a welcoming tool for charging up my phone on the go. However, hooking up my phone to the usb charger, and I get a "not charging" warning on my phone. I tried this same charger on a vaio fs and some old dell desktop, and it charges up just fine.
Im pretty sure the USB 2.0 is a standard, say, 5.0V at 500ma? or something like that. Is there a setting in either windows or through a lenovo update that I am missing?

I'm curious - did you get the same message whether the TP was plugged in, or running off battery?

I believe Windows is able to turn off the power to USB ports in an effort to conserve..
Try going into the Device Manager, selecting your USB root hubs, and make sure the option to power down is UN-checked (in the Power Management tab.)
This fix is required for some people with Wacom tablets (though mine works with it checked..)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like it my phone takes too much juice.

The computer is running off AC power, and under Optimized, Max Performance, and All timers disabled power scheme, no charge. And turning off the root hub power management didnt get my phone charging. Oh well, thanks for the help!

Ironic, I had the same problem with an ipod in my usb ports? I disregarded it as being some funky 3G ipod business, but seems that might not be the case?

Maybe it would work if you connected a powered USB hub to your TP's USB port and connect the phone to the powered USB hub.
Of course, it might just be easier to bring the phone's travel charger along.

I find the USB ports on my T60 to be very useful in charging my BlackBerry's, as well as my regular Mobiles. I also use it to power my 120GB, 5400RPM external hard drive with just a single cable. I have also used it to do both, run the external drive and charge the BlackBerry and that's true if the ThinkPad is running on battery power alone or plugged into A/C power.

Daniel,
Did this work for you?

I think It's a good idea to un-check this. I usually connect USB Hard Disks using 2 USB cables and this should ensure 500mA are supplied onto each port.

Hi Mike,
The setting didnt seem to make any difference on my T60. So sad...but on a second note, I found it quite strange that my nokia phone adaptor uses 7.6V...even though I regularly charge with the standard 5v plug at work.

I definitely think there's a power stability issue with the USB ports on the T60. My Blackberry functions as a 1XRTT/EVDO modem when plugged in via USB, but when I'm running on battery power, it disconnects every few seconds. As soon as I plug my T60 into AC power, though, it works fine.
I've got a service call scheduled with IBM/Lenovo. I'll be bringing this issue up with them.
