So I just got my T60P, made the rescue CD/DVD set
should I also make a copy of (C:/swtools/Drivers/) as well?

I ordered XP Home since I can get free XP Pro and Vista from school.
1. Should I go Vista or XP Pro route?
2. I plan on installing Ubuntu, so should I go virtual or the dual boot way?

Also I wan to delete EVERYTHING on HD but after I clean install vista or XP Pro to use ThinkVantage features do I have to make an extra partition?

My DVD-+RW drive shows up as DVD-RAM drive, any comments?

Any other comments or tips for a first time ThinkPad user before I clean up the system?

1. I would go with XP Pro
2. I would dual boot since it will be slower going virtual

Nope just install ThinkVantage on your current partition and it's good to go.

Mine came with it like that too. If it really annoys you, you can edit it's name in the registry.

I was confused about the DVD-RAM name because during order I selected DVD/RW DL but now i just ran a system utility and it says this drive is capable of reading and writing RAM media as well as all other media. True, False?

So the Hidden recovery partition can be deleted now?

Not really, it's included in that rescue/restore media of yours that you just created.

Depends on your preference. XP is said to be more stable at the moment.

Mine came with it like that too. If it really annoys you, you can edit it's name in the registry.

DVD-RAM is a new technology for rewriting DVDs and is totally different than DVD-+RW.

I just tried to explore the CD's I created using Win Explorer but I can't view anything, maybe its only available during restore mode?

There are two kind of disks that you can create 1. Rescue 2. Recovery. My assumption was you had made both of them.

rescue and recovery startup disc (1 CD)
Product recovery disk (1 DVD)

The restore disc's pretty much just restore the machine there is not much else you can do with them as far as pulling files off if that's what you are trying to do.

All Thinkpad DVD writers since the Multiburner on the T42 support DVD-RAM, and are recognized as DVD-RAM drives by Windows. The latest ones also do DVD+-RW and DL.

I'm trying to do a clean XP pro install but I'm running into hard drive problem.

During the XP setup start it say press F6 to specify drivers so when i hit that then at the screen where i'm supposed to point to the drivers, i get error of no floppy drive or other device found.
I have the drivers on CD and a USB key

I've also tried going without the drivers but once the setup files are loaded and where it asks to pick a partition, no HD found and setup ends there.

help please

Unfortunatly Windows XP does not support the SATA hard drive by default. You can't load any drivers during the install process because microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided that drivers could only be loaded from your A: 3.5" floppy drive during install.

But, in the Bios of the computer you can set the HD to compatibility mode. Then the windows install can proceed normally. After that you can install the Intel storage matix driver and you can switch the Bios back to ACHI mode.

so you are saying change the settings in the BIOS then Install XP then change the BIOS settings back and then install the drivers?

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

1) change HD to compatibility mode in Bios
2) install windows
3) install Intel Storage Matrix Driver (download from lenovo.com -- follow instructions there)
4) reset HD back to ACHI mode
5) install the rest of drivers.

because earlier i read that matrix drivers were to be installed before OS, and that made me say ummmm what?

i finished installing XP pro and most of the drivers and thinkvantage software BUT im having 2 problems
first, in device manager i still cant find drivers for "PCI device"

and second, when I try to install audio software i get an error " The HDA Audio bus driver is required and not found"

For one of your issues, just a guess, but have you installed the IBM (or is it now Lenovo) power management driver?

The sound software can't be installed because windows is missing a sound component that the drivers don't install. This can be installed by installing the OS updates in:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-64133

after you install these updates you should be able to install the sound software. This will likely get rid of at least one unkown device in the device manager.

Specifically the update is: 888111 UAA.

Ideally you would want to install the drivers when the windows CD asks if you need to install any 3rd party drivers for installation purposes. Unfortunatly, you have to do it the way I described because T60s don't have floppy drives (the only way windows will install drivers before installation).

I first ran into this problem when I built a desktop with SATA and no floppy. Had to go a purchase a floppy drive because there was no compatibility mode in my bios for the desktop. It gets even better then that though. So, when I installed the drivers windows asks me if I am sure I want to install the drivers even though they were not signed by microsoft. I click "yes".

Then during the install process it asks me this again, but this time the USB drivers are not loaded, so my KB and mouse will not respond. Thus, I had no actual way of telling it to proceed. I had to kill the power and plug in a old PS2 keyboard.

Needless to say that I am underwhelmed by Windows XP's support for SATA.
