T60/p missing type, model and serial no.

#1 Post by gk » Mon May 07, 2007 12:38 pm

I have a T60p and have had the mainboard replaced.

When I go to run system update I get the error "Error 75 received from the Package Index Server". In system information the Model and Serial Number are both listed as unknown. I have read that this is because the technician did not update the EEPROM info after replacing the mainboard. I have tried the process described here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=12263 and can run the utility but not disable the EEPROM write protection.

Does anyone know, how I can set the serial number and model number for my T60p without having to return my laptop to IBM?

How can you say you cannot disable write protection? Could it be possible that the version you are using does not support the T60?

You can update the machine type and model using the bios flash update tool but it will not allow updating the serial number.

I've had problems with the eeprom update disk too.

Try this... Wait until the light on the floppy drive blinks and it's recognized before hitting escape. If you hit escape before it recognizes the disk, it won't disable the write-protection... or atleast, that's what I've found.

good luck.

I've tried the bios update utility but it simply says invalid model number whenever I enter my nodel "8DG".

The other update utilty that allows updating the serial number is version 1.74 and I still can't manage to disable the EEPROM protection. I'm booting from a CD and I've tried pressing escape so many times now its making my head spin. Thanks for your tip though but unfortunately it didn't help me.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I really would like to avoid sending my laptop back to IBM.

PM me with you e-mail address... I'll send you the executable to create the floppy disk v1.74.

I've used this with success on the T/R/X60 models using the technique described above.

I believe that's your real problem. The utility needs to run from a writable media, i.e. a floppy disk. I've read several other threads here where users were running into the same issue by trying to update with a CDROM.

I was told the same thing, and almost said that in my last reply, but I wasn't positive that it was an accurate statement.

Definitely try updating from floppy.

I too had my mobo replaced and they didn't re-enter the type/model info. Of course when I tried to use the ThinkVantage system update, I ran into the "Error 75 received from the Package Index Server".

Has someone tried the update utility (version 1.74) on a Z60t?

If yes, can you please pm me a copy.
