T61 Graphics limited?
I was totally excited about the T61 release and started scheming about replacing my T60 until I started digging a bit and now I'm wondering...
Anyone else notice that if you follow the link to the spec for the nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M it says the maximum digitial resolution is 1600 x 1200? Is this a typo or what as this is a 4:3 resolution? Or is this per display?
I am sure that I saw a post from someone using a T60 with the ATI 1400 to drive 1920 x 1200 through DVI. This is exactly what I want to do with a new T61 and I'm wondering if it's possible now?

Re: T61 Graphics limited?
There's no DVI port on the T61 unless you're using a dock, but yes that seems correct, you're not going to be able to output at 1920x1200 through DVI (you can through VGA). Kind of a bummer if you have a large widescreen LCD that you want to use when docked.turkington wrote:I was totally excited about the T61 release and started scheming about replacing my T60 until I started digging a bit and now I'm wondering...

I found that we can configure either:
1. One PC card slot and one express card slot OR
2. One PC card slot and card reader OR
3. One PC card slot and smart card slot
I thought we had both PC/Express card slot and card reader. This doesn't seem too good.

Yup indeed. I have mentioned this in two previous threads.gator wrote:I found that we can configure either:

Suppose we'll have to settle for an extra express card memory card reader and go for option #1
At least they haven't dropped the pc card like other manufacturers. That would be even worse!

You forget a much higher price. I guess there are so much people will go for the high-end laptops no matter how much they sale it.

Actually, will this ever exist? I mean apparently the only difference between the non-p and the p were the "pro" video card and the IPS pannel...
No more IPS pannels left and the new T61 already have a quadro "pro" video card... so...

The T61p 14.1'' will have 1680x1050 screen, instead of the pitiful one they include now. Plus I am hoping, praying, that they will have a decent graphics card.
Is the PCMCIA/Express Card on the left side when facing the screen? So you can have a PCMCIA + the ExpressCard 54? But you cannot have the ExpressCard 54 + Memory Card reader? Well that sucks... I understand why they're sticking with the PCMCIA slot because everybody still has the peripherals, and the ExpressCard market isn't really at it's prime, but that's basically saying you can't have a card reader - what gives?
Firewire? Why? Nobody wants it, it'd be more use if you put an e-Sata port on it.
The T61 really is splitting heads. Who makes a mobile platform with greater power usage/inefficiency? Say goodbye to 8 by 2008.
EDIT: Somebody else made this point. Why the 667Mhz RAM if your FSB is 800Mhz, bottleneck anyone?

I'm a little confused. Where Is the 4 in 1 (or more) memeory card reader? I don't think I have seen a picture of it and thetabook implies it is not there on current models.
If this was WSXGA, I would be ordering today. And, I want the integrated webcam as well.
Curious also about batteries. Is the 4 cell the only that fits flush? And is there a size difference between the six and 7 cell? If not, why offer both?
[censored]. Been waiting so long for this, now must continue to wait for the "right" configuration for me.

In the PCMag review I think it was, the guy says that he has an ExpressCard 34 slot + a card reader.gator wrote:I found that we can configure either:

What is the SmartCard slot for?

I think this is for saving space for the widescreen.
FRiC wrote:Hmm, why are ALL the USB ports vertical now? I have some mini card readers that are pretty wide (to fit the memory cards), they wouldn't be able to fit on the T61 without lifting the base or using an extension cable.

Just a few thoughts as a new owner of my first thinkpad. Bought a T60p last week (T7200, 2 gig, flexview screen) but of course I wondered if I would regret not waiting for the T61s. After reading all the reviews I think I made the right call.
The flexview is a big reason as there is nothing yet on the horizon that can replace it (and as a writer I'm not a ready convert for widescreen) But beyond that, I would agree that the T61 represents THE FUTURE -- but as yet only in embryo. There is no remotely affordable ram to take advantage of the 800mhz FSB, the OS that will really make use of Santa Rosa innovations is just out of beta, the port choices try to straddle uneasily the old and new by making you choose between express card/pcmia, multi-card reader etc.., no DVI but a display port promised in 2008, and battery technology that is months behind the new performance demands, making the T61s less travel friendly than thinkpads years older.
BUT I can't wait until the T61s grow up, hopefully just in time for my next machine.

Strictly OT, but someone mentioned that the T62s will be out in six-months? Are the product cycles that small? Or did he not know what he was talking about?

Never had an issue myself. USB cables with a lead fit in any configuration, memory sticks are sometimes a problem, being too deep and therefore cannot be put side by side with another device. But apart from that, never had any problems.

Just tried configuring a T61 on the US site for fun. Can you not get Turbo Memory if you have a wireless card? Or is this WAN thing, the mobile phone network thing?

i was just at staples last night and saw they had a lenovo z61m, i have never touched a widescreen before so i wanted to check it out befor ei make my t61p purchase when its out.
first touch of the keyboard and plastic surounding screen and keyboard made me drop my mouth in awe and say out loud to myself " this is a POS" .. honestly gentlemen, the z61m they had there was falling apart, screen was nice and tight as usual, but the keyboard and plastic areas surrounding it (also near the thinkvantage blue button) flexed like a trampoline!
i hope the t61s are not like this.
really discouraged me.
