This review talks about the R61 and mentions that performance is similar to T60p. Battery life appears to be better with the T60p also. Is this a fair comparison? Similar CPU speeds, same memory, disk speed, etc.

Oddly, it lacked in every tests (Multimedia multitasking test, Adobe Photoshop CS2 image-processing test, Apple iTunes encoding test,
Microsoft Office productivity test, DVD battery drain test) they performed.

R61 is getting to be a very strong performer and even close to the T61 according to Lenovo themselves.

Could someone kindly point out the main differences between the R and the Ts?

T61 and R61?

Upon quickly skimping through, I don't see any difference in specs.

yea I second that, they are getting rid of the Z series because the T series are getting too similar, so why is the R series still here? Is it like a budget line or something?

I just went thru the Lenovo shop site and similarly configured a R61 and T61. The R61 is about $70 less. So, it sure looks like these products are converging. I guess the difference is size and weight?

I think Lenovo's strategy is to use the added value R series to compete with HP & Dell...

But comparatively, at the moment by seeing the specifications feature list, their T series is not much added-value anymore, that eventually may kill the T series. If the outcome is like that, then that's really stupid... T series is the hallmark of Thinkpad

The dimensions are certainly different but the weight is **nearly** same. According to the tabook:

T61 with 4 cell battery weighs 5lb and with 6 cell it weighs 5.3lb.

Similarly, R61 with 4 cell battery weighs 5.2lb and with 6 cell it weighs 5.4lb.

This would mean, that the R61 is the same motherboard as the T61 but with a larger footprint. Which means... it will be much more silent and cooler, I assume.

So what's left then... a few more inches here and there? Different chassis? Different material?

I'm curious too. Aside from some slight differences in weight and bulk, are there any real performance differences?

I am quite posotive that Matt Kohun from lenovoblogs.com confirmed that they will not kill the T.
As for the differences between the R and T he said, he would post the differences later on the blog, so stay tuned.
