Need help setting up external monitor using VGA/DVI adapter

I'm trying to connect an external LCD monitor directly to my thinkpad T60p without a dock. The external LCD monitor uses a DVI connection, so I bought a VGA<->DVI plug adapter to plug the monitor into the side of the T60.

Trouble is, I can't get anything on the external monitor.

Under BIOS, I've tried changing the display to DVI+LCD, VGA+LCD, Analog(VGA), Digital(DVI), with no luck.

In Windows Vista, I've tried all presenter modes, none of them detect the external monitor.

In Windows -> Display properties I've tried to extend the desktop onto the monitor with no luck as well.

I'd appreciate any help. i'm wondering if I can't plug a DVI cable into the ThinkPad using the adapter?

I don't think a passive adapter like the one you have will work. You need to get a VGA-DVI converter (different from adapter).

RonS is the expert here, maybe he has some suggestions. He has some tips in the following thread:

Ah, I see. I am used to having the DVI -to- VGA adapter plug from previous laptops, and thought I could use it the same way going from VGA -to- DVI. Looks like I will need more than a plug to make that happen (i.e., a dock).

Thanks for the fast reply gator.
