new T60p serious problems

Hello!

I got my brand new T60p a couple of days ago and I've tried and failed 2 (!!!) times to install Windows XP SP2.
The system in question is 2007-YLX (Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2GB RAM, FireGL V5250, etc.)
When I first installed Windows, I went to the regular procedure: Windows Update. Picked up the latest updates (INCLUDING software updates like FireGL drives).
After the install, I installed ThinkVantage Update software to get the latest drivers from Lenovo. It took a couple of hours to download ~800MB of software, and I left the install immediately option enabled. It managed to install just the BIOS update, afterwards...nothing.
The BIOS update went fine, I was able to boot into the computer, but when I tried to install the latest FireGL drivers from Lenovo, I got a BSOD. :/
Ok, format C: , install Windows again.
During the second install I went to the Windows update again just to pick up WINDOWS related updates (not hardware (FireGL drivers,etc.))
Afterwards I installed ThinkVantage Update utility, AGAIN I downloaded ~800MB of updates but I DIDN'T INSTALL THEM immediately. I wanted to install the updates myself. So after they downloaded I just choose to install Intel Chipset Update, JUST that..nothing else. It installed, restared the computer, and then: BAM!
"unable to boot windows, the pci.sys file is either lost or corrrupted. you can fix it via Windows Setup if you press 'r', bla bla bla".

I'M GOING CRAZY since I lost an entire DAY!

The Windows XP are legit, activation went fine, WHAT IS WRONG!?!?!? what I am doing wrong? what's wrong with my BRAND NEW COMPUTER!?!??

How do I install windows and drivers?

What OS did your computer come with? Vista?

Try to do a restore from the rescue and restore partition, that'll reset everything back to factory spec. Then take it from there.

It came with no OS.

...because it's one of those that doesn't have an OS preinstalled, what's so strange about that?

now...does anyone have any info how to install the drivers? :/

Lenovo's web says "2007-YLX" should be a T60 with 64MB ATI Radeon X1300 installed; while you said you've got a T60p with FireGL V5250.

Try to make sure which chip is actually installed in your Thinkpad and select the correct drive for the graphic chip.

I don't think X1300 and FireGL V5250 use the same drive, but it is just my guess.

noticed that, too.
hey, what I do. they don't sync their product details.

V5250 is inside.

I'm doing windows update (doing it for an hour know).
After it's finished,I'm gonna make an image of the C partition so if something gets broken again I can restore.

Did you installed Windows use the Compatibility Mode under the BIOS options. Then you should change it to the BIOS default (can't remember the name's option) so that you take advantage of the SATA Interface. I'm unsure if this caused the error getting corruption on the .sys file.

Another thought is that you should keep out Windows Updates, it may be my personal experience, but I rather download the necessary packages and slipstream those in a XP install files.

As a rule of thumb when installing XP on a Thinkpad:
1. If you use the T60, install first the SATA driver
2. Then install the chipset drivers
3. Then video, audio, LAN, etc
4. Keep out of Windows Updates (especially installing Device Drivers)
5. I don't use the Software Installer, I like to keep it simple, in the old way, downloading only the stuff I need.

Is not normal you are having BSOD's on your new machine. Follow my advices.

I use compatibilty (don't want to hassle with AHCI).
everything's fine now.
it was a matter of proper ORDER of installing drivers (windows update->ATI FireGL (by Lenovo via sys update)->then the others)
it works like a charm now.
