These pics are from notebookreview.com forums (need to be member there to view the pics). Since no one seems to have posted them here, I thought I'll post.The screen seems to be skightly off-center, but the T61 does look sturdy and very thinkpad-ish

T61 looks alot like Z series notebook though.

Its good to see that the "Richard Sapper Box" is still alive ... I kind of like the front edge design, wish they had it like that in the 15" models ...

looks nice. front jacks aren't as offensive as I thought they'd be, and the design looks more like the t40s than the t60s did from the front. Anyone want to do a 15.4" t60 and 14.1" t61 side-by-side to compare size difference?

And I find that disgusting! Many previous Thinkpads also had off-centered LCDs, but none of them looked as bad as this one. This has reinforced my decision not to buy a T61!

The overall design looks so old school. IMO, the most modern-looking Thinkpads were the T4* and X4*.

T4x was the peak of thinkpad design IMHO. I love them.

I would mask the vist serial number if I were you, and since I pointer it out I would do it quickly

I added one more pic, the T61 is thicker than the T4x, because of the rollcage I guess ...

Even if you can, keep in mind it's just a demo machine.

Thanks for the pics, I didn't notice the skewed screen until you pointed it out. It looks quite nice. The T4x line is the peak, perhaps. I haven't had any other experience apart from my T41p.

I don't like that the battery doesn't fit across most of the back, so it means that larger batteries will protrude more.

Thanks for the pic. I had no idea it's thicker! This is unacceptable!

I can't stand that the battery is protuding at the back.
As the battery looks very small, I wonder if this is the standard battery or the exended?

Overall impression:
We are entering the Dark Ages of Thinkpad design...

I don't believe the 1/2 mm will bother me if it's a more stable machine, but I'm still going to wait for a 14" 4:3 or maybe a 15,4" - Jury ist still out

I only have experience with 15" TPs. But thinking about it, i think the 15" touchpad was too close to the ultranav buttons on the T4x, even though there is 2cm room to move it further away. That's where i think they hit the T60 series spot-on. Not adding bulkiness and with better functionality, but i still hate their choice of removing practically all the colors.

Now they introduce the T61 with

- odd off-center screen... i didn't see that either before you pointed it out.
- thinklight is extremely off-center
- the internal mic is just next to the touchpad and click buttons. You'd need to stop any recordnings quietly...
- And also aestetically: Why two different sizes of hinges?

Anyone knows what the use of the two "skuffed" parts to the left and top of the lcd are?

The T4x has two different sizes of hinges, (most noticable when you take it apart). Probably something to do with stability - one takes more load than the other, but I'm not an engineer.

The "skuffed" parts - good question - Aesthetics, a little weight saving 0.1g

there have always been two different sizes of hinges on 14" t's, at least since t4x series but probably earlier.

its 4.jpg and my bad i thought that was your personal computer so I was trying to help you avoid some of the headaches I ran into before after posting some pictures os my computer. I had to prove to MS that I was the legit owner for them to activate my software and give me a new serial number after they blocked the old one.

How come the audio input/output in the front? It doesn't make sense to me.

My thoughts:
Having used 3 Thinkpads in my short life, I can comment on this new T61:

- Indeed the off-centre LCD looks a bit odd, but a different thing is when you're using the laptop
- I think the reason the headphone & mic-in are in the front is, what I think, that Lenovo is redirecting the T series to be consumer oriented (i.e. Multimedia laptop)
- The integrated Mic issue: I think the placement is better than in the T4x series (I was recording some audio files with my voice, but when the annoying fan comes on I can clearly hear the noise in the recording, not optimal)
- I very much like the T4x design, but a note is the fan is practically in the middle of the laptop case, so there's only one exhaust instead of 2 on the T6x laptops.

A question: In the 5.jpg pic, the palmrest material seems similar like the outer magnesium material T4x series had right?

I would even trade my T42p for a new T61. I'm assuming the presumption that is the coolest and silent Thinkpad ever, so I'm concerned in having a quiet machine.

In my viewpoint, they have turned this business oriented T series completely into multimedia machine, unless ofcourse they surprise us with upcoming models.

I don't like what lenovo has done to these thinkpads. I think they could've made people more happy by keeping the design features of T60 and offering them with 15'' IPS LCD's.

I suspect that Lenovo is trying to gradually make the Thinkpads look more and more like their own 3000 series, and eventually merge the two.

And that shall be written in the history books as a "ThinkPad Conspiracy"...
