I won't say that. It's too early to suggest it.
If the factory memory worked fine in both slots then there is no problem with any of the slots.
However to make it firm, do this:
Run your machine exclusively on each slot (install the user bought in only the slot where it works) for few hours and do some "heavy work" on your system, if BSOD comes on only with user bought and not with the factory installed then the former is bad, if vicerversa then it would be time to get in touch with lenovo.

If that is the case, the seller should provide you with a good memory module as well as the original hard drive.

So I tested the user added memory by itself on the top slot again, and it appears to be fine this time round. I run PC doctor memory tests, is this an adequate way of evaluating the sticks?

To an extent yes.
However, if you would like to do a deep analysis on memory,
here (freeware) is a software. Follow their instructions on installation and running the program.

I really feel quite stupid right now. For some reason I failed to attribute the lack of BSODs with the fact that I installed the video drivers last night. I have had no issues since. Well, there's still that dead pixel which is infuriating. I ran UDPIX for about 6 hours to no avail.

You are eligible to complain to the seller or ask for some partial refund if you received something different than you bid on [hdd 5400 rpm Vs. 7200rpm speeds].
If the seller did not do much explaining in the description about the display (regarding the dead pixel precisely) then it will be your bad for not asking, otherwise you should notify him of this issue too.
Lastly, if you're totally not happy with what you received then see if there was some kind of refund policy set by the seller. If there is you can return it. Business sellers usually have return policies as compared to private seller's none. But keep in they might charge you some fees to cover their ebay charges.

The system was actually advertised as new, sealed in box, which it most definitely was not. Regardless, I'll keep this one seeing as I got it for a good price.
Right now I'm pretty sure what happened was, after replacing the HDD, they used recovery disks from another system. I was wondering why no video drivers were installed after my factory re-install. And just then, bluetooth non-drivers were caushing BSODs again. So I think this laptop may have the standard T60 set of software, instead of the T60p.

Perhaps, could be a case.
However, Types 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2613, 2623, 2637, 6369, 6370, 6371, 6372, 8741, 8742, 8743, 8744 have one recovery disk regardless of model.

I would second ryengineer's reply. All T60/p uses the same set of recovery CDs. (Including 4:3 and WS models).
Now I am thinking, he used a recovery CD set from a DIFFERENT machine. (i.e. an X60 or R60, possibly others).
Not sure if there is a way to check this though.

I have to admit I was a bit lazy before and was reluctant to try out memtest. I didn't have any blank CDs around. Well, I finally decided to test it to be certain if I have memory problems or not. I tested each stick on the top slot. Turns out that the user added stick had something like 800 errors and I was only 40% through the test before I stopped it since it told me enough. Now I'm 80% through on the factory stick, and no errors. I guess that explains most of the problems I was having with 2 sticks!
And yeah, I do still believe the recovery partition is wrong. Too many driver irregularities to be the proper one, I mean, this is the Thinkpad we're talking about.

Looks like you now have a case for return.
Bad memory, wrong HD, BSOD, etc.

Since you want to keep it, try overstating your disappointment to the seller (sound very angry, threaten to return) then, while bargaining, fall back to a position of getting the orig. hard drive and a replacement memory if he has one. This guy knew he was selling what he thought was a lemon. Congrats on diagnosing all the problems correctly and finding them to be relatively minor.
