T60 WS palmrest w/o trackpad?

#1 Post by Daver » Tue May 22, 2007 5:15 pm

So, after looking through the Hardware Maintenance Manual, I take it that its too much to ask for a T60 WS palmrest without trackpad? I don't see any FRUs for it.

I loved that for my personal T42, and at work my T42s trackpad just gathers dust.

Any suggestions for a new T60p widescreen palmrest replacement to lose the trackpad?

TIA,
-Daver

Not going to happen. Touchpads are the future, with trackpoints coming in 2nd place, or 3rd if you use a mouse.

That's a fairly unhelpful response.

Unfortunately it is the only one you will get.
Though I can't even consider using a touchpad (I find it so inefficient, and even on a mac it is still less easy for me to use it than to use a trackpoint), a majority of laptop users prefer them.

A touchpad-free bezel does not exist, and apart from building one yourself (good luck with that), you're only option if you really want a laptop without touchpad would be to buy an X60.
Or if you want a widescreen laptop without touchpad, you will have to wait for the X62, I guess.

I just go into the control panel and disable the touchpad, or you have the option of making it a scroll device only.

Hi,

There's a replacement palmrest without touchpad available for the z61m, maybe it will fit? Here's the FRU: 41W4868

There is also one available for the T4x series, I don't have the number with me, but I did upgrade my t41 to be touchpadless.

If not, hopefully they will eventually release a palmrest without the touchpad - it was a quite a while after the Z60m series came out that they finally had a touchpad free palmrest available.

Are you serious about an "X62" being that way, or just thinking out loud there?

While the cost would be probably be prohibitive, someone could probably make a mold from the current palmrest bezel, trim out the touchpad, and recast it without it. The cost of getting the right plastic etc would make this a serious mod. Not impossible, but not worth it to me.

I wonder if one will popup for the T61? That would make my shopping list.

I second this suggestion. I disabled my touchpad the day I received my new T60 and have barely noticed it since. Fortunately, it lies fairly flush with the palmrest (aside from the buttons, which don't get in the way since my fingers are always hovering over the trackpoint :)

Yes, well that's granted. Of course I disabled it immediately, that's not the same as what I'm looking for.

Now that I have the T60p in my possession, I can see the touchpad isn't as bad as the T4x touchpad was in terms of intrusiveness. It is flatter, and the buttons aren't as obnoxious either.

I'm still gonna hope Lenovo releases a touchpad-less palmrest, but oh well.
