T61 nVidia driver - where to download?

#1 Post by larsv » Wed May 23, 2007 9:57 pm

I am trying to do a clean install of Vista on my new T61 with the Nvidia display chipset.

I cannot locate a driver at Lenovo's site, and the drivers downloadable at Nvidia don't seem to be the right ones. Lenovo support instructed me to do a system recovery, but that was not the purpose of this exercise.

Does anybody know where to find drivers for nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M?

More info - System Update has completed its installations but display adapter is listed as generic vga adapter. Other devices list Biometric Coprocessor, Network Controller (the Intel abgn variant) and PCI Memory Controller.

I checked this and this and even this. None of them seems to have the NVidia driver. They only have one for the X3100.

If you could get a factory recovery, you should be able to get the appropriate drivers from the SWWORK directory.

Drivers are in SWTOOLS folder

#3 Post by larsv » Thu May 24, 2007 1:17 am

Thanks for bontistic for the tip - all drivers seem to be present in the preloaded setup, in C:\SWTOOLS.

(I used a separate hard drive for the clean install, so I had the original drive intact.)

We received our T61 2 days ago (7664-17U) and I don't have the drivers for the NVS 140M either.

Can someone open up the INF file and post the version? Or even better upload the driver somewhere that i can get at it?

have already emailed Lenovo about it but have not received a reply.

Thanks!

BTW - I have it running in "NVS 120M" mode by using the BETA 160.01 Forceware drivers for Vista. I can run Aero Glass but I would like to get the official drivers if possible.

EDIT: Clarification - We are running Vista on the T61 and require the Vista 32bit driver.

No official Nvidia driver for XP yet

#5 Post by larsv » Thu May 24, 2007 5:56 pm

I spoke to Lenovo support, there is no driver for XP yet for the T61 with Nvidia 140M. There was also no confirmation that XP would ever be fully supported, but that sounded like a rephrase of "don't know".

Interesting find by dnara00 that the Forceware beta works. I was just about to give up on running XP for now.

BTW the driver for Vista has version 7.15.11.0112.

Thanks for the version but that isn't turning anything up either. There is an XP version of the 165.01 Forceware drivers that list support for the 140M specificaly that you might want to try:

I got the 160.02 working in XP when I chose 120M. Still need power management drivers from Lenovo though, so XP is still not quite there. Or perhaps I screwed up my installation. I think I'll wait a few weeks before attempting to run XP.

Re version in Vista... there is a modes.txt file that lists that the driver is for FX 570M and NVS 140M. Build date mentioned in the file is 4/13/07. The nvlt.inf file also lists version as 7.15.11.0112. Only the two adapters mentioned earlier are supported.

I believe the forceware driver works with 140M because I found its name in the list of videocard supported in the .inf file included.

Looks like Lenovo posted official drivers under the Driver Matrices.

They are dated 5/25/2007

I am expecting to recieve my t61 sometime next week. When I get it I want to do a clean install to get rid of the bloatware. I bought the computer with vista business, but as I understand it the computer won't come with any discs for a clean install. I will only be able to do a system recovery which would just restore it with all that garbage I don't need. Any solution to my problem?

How many processes were running before you did the clean install. Someone on another forum said they had 100 processes running out of the box. That sounds a little obsurd to me but I may just be used to vista.

You can just copy the folder of Vista left in your root drive C:\ then use nlite for Vista to make it bootable image then burn it to a disc.
More info can be found in PC World article.

My experience:

I had something like 94 processes on mine at first. Clean install got it down to about 45 before adding thinkpad software.

Recovery disks will recreate the hard disk like it was when you got it. To do a clean install you need access to some drivers that Lenovo have not yet posted so it might be a good idea to copy the drivers to a CD as well. This is the C:\SWTOOLS folder. Just in case.

Make sure that you have the following disks made before you wipe the disk, so you can recover from anything:
- Start recovery disc (DVD-R) this is the boot disk.
- Product recovery disc 1 (DVD-R) this is the software disk incuding Vista.

Note that you CANNOT make a clean install with these disks. You have to have a clean Vista install disk.

Vista installer will not wipe the recovery partition. If you want to reclaim that space then be absolutely sure that you know what you are doing, if your recovery disks dont work then you have to order new ones from IBM for $45 plus shipping. I used an XP install disk to wipe all partitions off the disk, then do a clean install. Once again, not recommended for novices.
