Help me choice - T61 / D630 / D830 / T61p

#1 Post by Paul386 » Mon May 28, 2007 4:47 pm

I am purchasing a notebook for school. As you can see, I have having some issues deciding what notebook to go with.

What I want:

T7300 (2.0Ghz)
Vista Ultimate
2GB of memory (most likely purchase 1GB and get 1GB off of newegg.com)
Dedicated Graphics (not powerful)
Intel Turbomemory
80-120GB 7200RPM drive
DVD-ROM
Intel Wireless N

I am concerned about the T61's battery life and screen brightness. However, the Dell Latitude series is much more expensive and does not have Turbo memory / dedicated graphics.

Isn't the T61p launching June 5th?

5th, 7th, something like that. The T60 series can be easily outfitted with those specs. Actually, thats almost my laptops config, though my HDD is only 5400rpm.

T60 is a good choice. T61p would have a 256MB nVidia GFX chip. Guess that card outperforms the FireGL V5250 T60p has.

A coworker just bought a Dell Latitude D620 (precursor to the D630) and I just played with it for a few minutes. It's incredibly solid and beautiful, and the keyboard is much better than my Inspiron 6000's. Everyone considering getting the 14.1" WS T61 should also look into the Latitude D630.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

The D630 is so much more expensive than the T61, and it doesn't offer anything more.

I think the D830 is a competitor to the T61, but not the D630.

I thought the D630 is cheaper than the T61, no? Right now, the D630 starts at $899 on dell.com, whereas the T61 starts at $1,023 on lenovo.com.

What is the difference between the Small Business and the Medium/Large Business? It seems like the Medium/Large is more expensive?

Dell D630 (from Small Business Section)

T7300
Vista Ultimate
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ LCD Panel
2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
120GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM
24X CD-RW/DVD for Vista Ultimate
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Intel® 4965 802.11a/g/n Dual-Band Mini Card
Dell Wireless® 360 Bluetooth Module for Vista
Touchpad with UPEK® Fingerprint Reader
9 Cell Primary Battery
Dell Slim 65W Auto/Air/AC Adapter
D/Port Advanced Port Replicator
3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year Mail-in Service

$1816

What is the difference between Media / No Media? Is that the Yahoo / Google / MaCafee / Crap?

They are close to the same I guess. Lenovo sight is not working very well right now.

The Dell does not offer Intel Turbo Memory? Why Not?
Will this be something I can add in the future?

But the Dell does have a larger battery, and nicer Auto/Air/AC Adapter deal.

How about screen brightness? Who wins there?

Edit: I found this off of Cnet:

"The Latitude D630's 14.1-inch wide-screen display is remarkably bright (223 cd/m^2 in our Labs measurement)."

Of course Lenovo wins in the software department. (Dell preloaded crap sucks).

I think you changed my mind on the D630.

You have to get a D620. But that is okay. This will not be a graphics powerhouse.

I called Dell about the Intel Turbo Memory. He was clueless as to when it would be out.
