Gifted NIB T61: Can Be Returned For Additional Upgrades?

Paid ones, I mean.

I read that an unopened Lenovo-ordered TP can be returned with no restocking fees etc, if the person is willing to pay for upgrades.

Now, that was in reference to the person that ordered it, but if you get it as a gift, and don't open it, can you send it back and pay to add on upgrades? Sounds like wishful thinking, but I thought them doing this for the original person was as well.

It can't hurt to call up and ask... :) A number of pp's have reported that if you return a TP unopened for a unit higher in price (which yours would be with upgrades) they have not been charged the 15% restocking fee. Since the warranty goes with the machine and not the owner, I am not sure whether or not the machine was a gift would matter. The only downside to the exchange may be a lengthy shipping time for your new TP (depending on the model. Certain parts for the new T61s are in short supply right now).

Back in January, I was able to return an unopened Lenovo-ordered TP with no restocking fee. (I called them up to ask in advance, and this seemed to be their standard policy.) You just have to pay to ship it to them.

Just make sure you do it within 21 days as per lenovo return policy.

The answer was no, in case you wondered. Any gifted ThinkPad cannot be returned for whatever reason except by the person who ordered it. Took an hour to find that out, too. :(
