I use to put my notebooks in my carrying bag with the battery at the bottom and the screen latches sticking up, but now with the battery sticking out what is the safest way to lug the T61 around.

Buying a larger padded bag

Funny that you ask this, because I was wondering the same thing. I generally put the back side down, to protect the LCD, but now, I am not quite sure what to do....and no a bigger bag doesn't solve the issue. I am just worried that the battery might get jammed too far into the system and cause damage.

Maybe I can snag one of those padded strips and put it doubled over on the one corner of the bag, where the battery doesn't stick out...hmmmm

I try to use backpacks when I can (got a Targus XL atm), which necessitates that you insert the laptop on its side (Optical drive up, of course). I think this is the best way to go. Shoulder or handbags can be dropped too easily, and that's where what position the laptop is in, when it hits the ground, comes into play the most.

If you still go that route, then battery up is best since the weight of the battery will certainly strain the latching/locking mechanism due to gravity. The same is true of the optical drive/ultrabay device in a vertical position, so I insert a laptop drive up in a backpack.

Just be careful with cheap cases. Some have padded bottoms, but not padded tops, which can be equally crucial.

i picked up a nice obusform backpack, and it fits nicely on its side. and why would it matter that you put your optical drive up?

Like the battery, the Ultrabay latching/locking mechanism will be under additional strain with it facing downward.
