DDR2 questions - new questions

- How would you set the virtual memory amount in XP if you have 2G of DDR2?
- Will you need more power (65W->90W) to upgrade T60 Core Duo from 1G/2sticks to 2G/2sticks? (Or Will 1G stick draw more power than the 512M stick?)
- Will 2G make the laptop hotter?

- Is there any difference between DDR2-5300/667 and DDR2-5400/667?
- The 2 sticks originally came with my laptop are 5-5-5-15. Would it be ok if I replace them with 2 new sticks of 5-5-5-12?

Answered:
- Sisoft Sandra reported that my T60 "Dual Channel Support: No" although I have 2 official Lenovo DDR2-5300/512M sticks installed. Should it be a "Yes"?
- Timing: 5-5-5-12 and 5-5-5-15 which one is better/faster?

Thanks! :)

Of course the first one. RAM timing represents latency. The smaller the number is, the better

I hate to point this out, but unless you are running a server on that laptop, I doubt you can really tell the perf differences between the 2.

Even if he is, he won't notice the difference.

Yup.

I don't know for sure, but I believe that
1) Having RAM with 2 different clock speeds can make your system unstable (blue screen)
2) If both RAM modules are with same clock speed, theoretically it should work. The worst thing that can happen is that you will get blue screens every now and then (then you can exchange it).

Two RAM sticks of different timing would work but it only works at the highest timing (latency) of one of the RAM stick.

Try CPUZ and see what does it report.

I doubt that it is a bug in Sisoft Sandra. It should definitely be an "Yes" in your situation.

Yup. It's "Dual" reported in CPU-Z. Guess you and I found a SiSoft bug
8) Thanks.

maybe you could post your new questions as a new post? if you just update your OP, it makes it confusing as to what your new/current question actually is : /

Having more memory (extra module) will have negligble inpact on heat and/or power. If anything, you may get better battery life since you're more likely to keep off the hard drive.

Upgrading to Core 2 Duo will probably result in a cooler system with longer battery. That's been my experience, and the experience of others on this forum. I'm guessing because it does a better job at power management.

Replacing your stocks of 5-5-5-15 memory with 5-5-5-12 will do absolutely nothing for you except cost you money.

From my own experience 5-5-5-12 ram runs at 5-5-5-15, so does 5-5-5-15 ram. That's what everest tells me. I've tried both, one pair of 1gbs (the 12 ones) from lenovo and another pair of 2gb OCZs (the 15 ones).

I've just bought a pair of 2G total OCZ 5-5-5-15 and running fine so far. My virtual memory setting is at "System managed size".
