New here: Ordered a new T61

#1 Post by ilyap » Sat Jun 09, 2007 2:06 pm

I just wanted to introduce myself. I just ordered a new T61 over Memorial Day weekend and then called in to make modifications that were not yet available on the web for same discount offered that weekend.

I got the following configuration:

15.4 WSGGA (no camera), 2.2GHz, NVIDIA 126MB flash, No Turbo Mem Card, 100GB 7200RPM everything else fairly standard

A couple notes:
- I initially got 14.1 WXGA+, but after seeing similar sized laptops in the store and on this post, I was not particularly happy with the height of a 14.1 Widescreen laptop.

- I wanted a NVidia 256MB, but that option may not be available for a little while. I found out that you get relatively similar performance with NVidia 128MB with additional 128MB of main mem dedicated to graphics card. I don't do any 3-D graphics anyways, I just need enough to be able to run a couple of Virtual Machines.

- 15.4 WSXGA don't come with built-in cameras (shucks).

- By my research, Turbo Mem Card is a waste of $. In fact, I've read that it can slow down the performance under certain conditions. I can also see on this forum that it caused a number of problems for Windows Vista users.

- I preordered it with 1G 1SODIMM. I am getting 2G 1SODIMM for another 100 bucks on oempcworld.com for a total of 3G. Memory is getting cheaper fast.

- All this for ~$1250 including Mem Day discount and 15% IBM discount(I used to work there).

Thanks,
Ilya

First of all, .. welcome!

There's been reports by some users here that the 15.4" screen has unbalanced backlighting and is shaded as you move your head. The 14.1" screen was said to be better in direct side-by-side comparison.
Remember, the 15.4" is NOT flexview or IPS like the 15.0" thinkpad hi-res screen was

Thanks. I can't find any threads on backlighting ... Can you point me to one? I am curious if the resolution and graphics card makes a difference.
