I'm up for a new laptop to replace my aged fujitsu and I'm torn between the new T60P and the Sony VAIO BX760. One thing that concerns me a little is the amount of complaints I've read on this site about the heat and fan noise problems associated with the T60p - I was wandering do these problems still apply to the new models with Santa Rosa chipset? Any feedback or opinions would be greatly appreciated,

well whatever the issue is, a Sony will never be quite a match for a T-Series Thinkpad

Malduin, I think there are better laptops out there then a Sony and better companies. This is just one example of the many negative stories about Sony pcs and laptops I have encountered.

The new T61s do not have any of the overheating problems that plagued the T60s and T60ps.

Some Sony systems are nice. In fact, the hardware is nice, but sometimes the built quality is not fantastic. You will be hard pressed to find a more sturdy laptop than a thinkpad.

On another note, I just looked up that laptop. Are you planning on getting a 15in or 14in laptop, because the 15in only comes in wxga, which is less than ideal for some people.

Oh, and we only complain about the laptops because we own them, and are perfectionists.

Thank you all for the feedback its most useful. I live in a rural area of Tasmania so will have to order computer over net, and am reliant on the net for information as I don't have the luxury of local stores to view and try out the machines. I'm pleased to hear the overheating and noise problems have been fixed. The only other issue that someone may be able to help me with is, is that I am rusted onto the Lotus word processor and data base I think they leave the microsoft products for dead - does anyone have experience of Lotus being able to run in Vista? If not I will have to try and get a machine with XP,

I must say that you should not take this forum as an overall representation of ThinkPad quality. Why? Because the demographics of this forum are not representative. Rather, this forum is a great resource and place to exchange info about TPs among technically oriented individuals. Furthermore, I must say that many are picky, for instance when the GPU runs ONE degree hotter than it says it should on some standard. Or when the fan makes a barely perceptible noise and they call it noisy.

With this I don't mean to disparage the forum users. On the contrary, I mean to say that even though they are so picky, they still think that TPs are the best. Furthermore, since so many users are IT pros, or engineers, and still use TPs, I would actually say that, from an average consumer point of view, all the things listed above turn into a ringing endorsement of ThinkPads. Just my two cents.

Oh, and I would also avoid Sony at all costs!

My cousin had a similar experience with Sony Support for her PCG-K13. The DVD drive failed on her. She contacted Sony for support and they do not return her laptop until 3 MONTHS later with nothing fixed at all. The DVD drive still acts up.

I was going to buy a Sony SZ38 instead of my T60 but Im glad I didn't. Thinkpads are just so sturdy and though the Viao was pretty good looking and light, my 14.1 inch T60 is surprisingly good lookin! The titanium feel and light weight really makes it a great machine... besides i dont reallly kno wat the sony support is like....
