Question about Real Estate of 15.4 vs 14.1 T61

I know this is covered in great mathematical detail on some of the other posts, but I didn't see any 'actual' effects that are caused from going from 14.1WSXGA+ to 15.4WSXGA+.

I originally ordered a T61 14.1 WSXGA+. However, after visiting the store and seeing some of the 14.1 Wide screens, i was not particularly happy with the height reduction from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio (I am a developer ... I need to see the whole method ). So, I changed my order to 15.4 WSXGA+. What I didn't realize (stupid me) is that "real estate" for both are exactly the same. For some reason I assumed is that "height resolution" would be same for 14.1 SXGA+(not widescreen) and 15.4 WSXGA+. I still have a chance to rescind my changes.

So, my question is this ... am I really just "stretching" the image when I am going from 14.1 WSXGA+ to 15.4 WSXGA+ (assuming same dispaly setting). I currently have T42 SXGA+ and while I like the resolution, I wanted a 15.4 to give myself more "content" on the screen, but I doubt that I'll get that with WSXGA+ setting. Does this mean I would have to get 15.4 WUXGA to get that? Where am I going wrong in my logic?

I know this is basic, but I don't have a lot of experience with screen resolutions since I only have one laptop . I just want to confirm my thinking. I don't understand why people would go from 14.1 to 15.4 with same "real estate".

more resolution is what would give you more vertical lines. The height on the 14.1" WSXGA+ is the same as the 14" SXGA+ as they are 1680 x 1050 vs 1400 x 1050. The 15.4" WSXGA+ is essentially stretching the same resolution over a bigger screen. Think of HDTVs today, all 1080 TVs are the same, 1920 x 1080 (i/p) and even those ginormous 60+ inchers give you the same veritical/horizontal space as the smaller 32" ones.

In the realm of CRTs one would get a bigger CRT, for example to a 19" or even 21" to get nice resolutions such as UXGA (1600 x 1200) which aren't even an option on the 15" models that first started coming out. That's where your perception comes from and it applies the same to LCDs in a way too.

So to get more resolution you can get a 15.4" WUXGA screen and that will be 1900 x 1200. Or if you have the cheddar, the 15.4" WUXGA+ on the T61P model coming out
