T60p: Fan running constantly

Hiya,

So I finally got a chance to open my new T60p and play around with it and I'm quite impressed with the fit and finish and performance. However, I am completely annoyed by the fact that the fan runs constantly and is unpleasantly noticeable. So my questions are:

1) Is this normal for a T60p with a v5250? Do others have the same experience?

2) Is there any way to change this? I've heard of NHC, and the possibility of underclocking the GPU, but I've been unable to find specific instructions on how to do so.

3) Is the T60 with X1400 quieter? Should I have gone with that model?

Thanks.

Which version do you have? The 14inch regular, 15.4inch wide, or the 15inch regular?

I have a similar problem. Although mine, when placed on a surface like a mattress with no elevation, and when it's doing something like playing a movie, it gets so hot, it burns my fingers, and it eventually shuts down. I like the fact that it shuts down so as not to overheat to the point where the system might be at risk and break. When I say shutdown, it doesn't "properly" go through the shutdown process, it just turns itself off. :(

You are never supposed to place your laptop on top of something like a mattress. The mattress is soft, and as such can block the vents. You should always place your laptop on top of a hard surface.

14inch regular, have you called Lenovo tech support? Maybe they can do something about it. And have you tried blowing compressed air into the vents? Take a look at your vents and clean out any dust that might have accumulated there.

GPU Temp

Also, TPFancontrol reports my GPU temp to be ~68-70c at idle. This seems high to me. I found another post that said their GPU idled at 52c. Can anyone comment on this?
Should I open it up and put some Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU & GPU? Are there instructions somewhere on how to open up a T60?

Easiest way some forum posters say to alliviate the overheating problem is blowing compressed air in the air vents of the machine. Alternatively removing and resetting the heatsink whilst blowing air would do the trick.

I don't think placing the laptop on a matress would affect in the overheating process. I've monitored my CPU temp with NHC when I just laid the laptop on my matress and the temp didn't went up, also T series Thinkpad do not have bottom air exhausts like many other computers, so that always the air flows to the sides of the chassis.

The fan assy for the T60 and T60p is one big fault.

Putting arctic silver or any other thermal paste won't help the temperatures, because there is a 2.5-3 mm thermal mat between the GPU and the copper heatsink. The thermal mat will absorb shocks, if you drop your laptop, so that your GPU etc. won't be damaged by the heatsink. For that purporse 2.5-3 mm is much more than needed.

In abpout 15 days I'll be experimenting a little with a new fan assy, a copper plate in the right thickness and a 0.5-1 mm thermal mat, adhessive thermal paste, and AS5 to improve the T60p fan performance.. which i hope is the right approach.

Lenovo might say they have improved the fan performance of the T61. In my oppinion they have just corrected a major flaw on the T60(p) which was unacceptable in the first place.
This probably explains why they are running their FireGLs underclocked at stock.
