For those of you considering an X61 vs. T61...

#1 Post by shinjiplus » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:02 am

NOTE: i do not have an X61, i have an X41. however, since i was looking for mainly a size comparison, i hope the (forthcoming) pics will be of some help.

i just received my T61 14.1" WS (7664-17U). it is a MONSTER compared to my X41. i had seen the T61 pics, but i merely assumed it would be marginally larger than the T42/T43's i've seen at the office.

weighing in at 5.6 lbs (with 6-cell) it is almost twice the weight of my X41. i will try to post pics later, as i was unable to find the cruicial X vs T pictures to help with my choice.

needless to say, i am slightly disappointed by the T61 in initial impressions.

Why didn't you order an X61 then?

Several people on this forum pointed about the mass and weight of T61. You should've asked here before ordering one.

However if you're coming from an X to T-series machine then you're going to feel more of the difference.

Switching from an X-series to a T-series thinkpad, you will see the difference but if you are switching from an R-series to a T-series, you will like the T61.

That's like most people do, included me...
Switching between X-series and T-series.
X20->T21->X31->T43p->X60s
Once I had T...then think it's too heavy to carry around, then switch to X
Once I had X...then complain the performance is not high enough, no independent graphic card...no cd drive, no SXGA+ screen
Then switch back and force...
Finally decided to stay with X61, since there's no any good comment about the new T61 series...

Owned my T61 for 3 days now. Don't like vista so I did a clean install of XP. I like my T61, very fast compared to my T42p... so there, you heard something good about T61

actually i've read everything here, and also your pictures were a great help.

however, the pics don't really do it justice. and i was unable to find any X-series vs. T61 pics.

as for why i bought a T-series laptop? i wanted something so that i could get rid of a desktop and my X41 and merge into one (i got the mini dock as well), and also i cannot fit all of outlook onto my 12.1" X41 screen very well so i wanted a larger higher resolution screen.

the T61 looks to be a little too thick, and dimension wise, 0.5" should've been shaved off the left side and the top side (my X41 screen is not centred either, so please don't bash me about the screen bezel  )

X61 (non-tablet) with 12" SXGA+ FFS display would be perfect :-)

Did you actually weigh it yourself, or is that just a number given by Lenovo? My 14.1" SXGA+ T60 with 6-cell was 5.22 lbs. I am sure most people aren't happy with this weight increase.

i used a digital scale.

X41 w/ 4-cell: 2.8 lbs
T61 w/ 6-cell: 5.6 lbs

people above are correct, it is simply the shock from going from (one of) the smallest thinkpads ever to a larger machine.

Well, what do you expect from going from an ultraportable to a normal laptop :P

The comparison between my 15" T60 and my X61 is like going from a fullsize desktop to a handheld or something. Gigantic weight difference.

How do the keyboards on the T series compared to the X series? My issue with ultraportables has always been too-small screens, cramped keyboards and mediocre battery life.

The NMB keyboard on my X60s is as good as the one on my T42 for day to day usage. The Ctrl/Alt keys are smaller but I get used to it.

even in pictures it doesn't look all that "MASSIVE", so i guess it was just the initial shock of getting the T61 vs. my X41

#766417U is 15.4 " not 14.1"
766417U is 14.1 WS in US as well, the model-type is reserved for such sort of machine and 15.4 won't be added to it.

Heh. Is that an FS series VAIO? I have an 8900P3. Nice comparison to a T61. (Did you install Vista on the VAIO?)

I had the T40 and recently upgraded to the T60 WS. For the longest time I felt the new machine was HUGE in comparison--and still do when I go pick up the old machine. But, it's really only marginally larger and less than 1 pound heavier. My point is mainly that it doesn't take much to make you feel a difference.

I have a weird feeling of satisfaction when I see someone with a bigger machine.

i went from a T42 to a T60 and recently someone at work brought in their X60 and wow i want! but i didnt think X60's did a 1400x1050 res like my T60 does so i opted for the T60 which i'm happy with.

I've got a 14.1" SGA+ T60 and an X41 with the usual 12" XGA and can mirror the sentiment of many, that the something in between a T and an X would be "just right". I want my Goldilocks ThinkPad.

Too thick. I'm thinking more of something like a 570 but with an optical drive, 4lb weight and an SXGA screen at 13 inches in a smaller case, perhaps a smidge larger than an X20. The tech exists, sadly just not the market.

I'd love a machine in that size. Sadly, as you so rightly say, we won't see it.
