Screen Hangs

Hello. I am running a T60 Widescreen on Windows XP Pro, and I have recently noticed that when I've been away from the computer for awhile so that the screen and or hard disk turn off, when I come back and move the mouse or press a key, the system seems to start back up, but the screen does not turn back on. Usually I have to close the lid and open it again, or rarely I have to restart it to get the screen going again.
This does not happen from standby mode, but seems to happen when either the screen or hard disk shuts off from power saving settings.
Any ideas? Is this a hardware or software problem?
