How many TFTs can be connected without using the PCI-e slot?

Hi,
There is a lot in this forum about connecting multiple monitors to the advance dock when making use of the PCI-e slot. However I can’t seem to find an answer to the question “how many monitors can be connected without using this slot?” Is it possible to connect one monitor to the VGA & one to the DVI and have the laptop screen working as well?
Thanks in advance
Wayne

surely you can... can't have a multi-monitor setup with only 1 working monitor now can you :) The PCI-E card tho handles that and if you have one with 2 DVI port then even better.

You can only do dual-monitor with an external monitor connected through VGA since there is no dvi port available. That's why people use a PCI-E slot.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. There is a “DVI-D” port available. Can I not connect a monitor to this port?

Thanks

If you are in a docking station with a DVI port, you can connect two monitors (one to the docking station VGA and one to the docking station DVI). But you will not be able to use the laptop built-in LCD at the same time. I'm driving two Dell 21" LCDs from the mini dock right now. If I flip up my laptop lid to turn on the built-in LCD, one of the 21" LCDs stops receiving a video signal.
